Harrisonburg, Va. – The series finale between the CAA's two top teams need 10 innings to decide, as the No. 24 Hofstra Softball team fell to James Madison, 11-8, Sunday afternoon at Veterans Memorial Park.
The Dukes earned the sweep, improving to 37-10 overall and 16-2 in CAA play, while the Pride dropped into second place at 35-11 overall and 15-3 in the conference.
The contest saw James Madison jump out to an early lead, but the Pride pulled ahead twice, once in the sixth and again in the 10th, before Kierstin Roadcap's walk-off three-run home run proved the difference-maker.
The Dukes grabbed a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first. Hofstra got on the board in the top of the third, with senior
Brielle Pietrafesa sending a solo shot to left field.
Senior
Brittany Allocca made it a one-run game in the top of the fourth, using a sacrifice fly with the bases loaded to plate a run. JMU then hit a solo homer to push the lead back to two in the bottom of the inning.
The Pride mounted a two-out rally in the top of the sixth, with Pietrafesa getting on base with a single to shortstop. Allocca then walked, and a single up the middle from senior
Sarah Edwards plated a run to make it 5-3. Junior
Courtney Scarpato then continued her hot streak, hitting a three-run homer to dead-center for the 6-5 Hofstra lead.
JMU forced extra innings with a two-out solo home run in the bottom of the seventh. The Dukes loaded the bases in the bottom of the eighth, but the Pride escaped the jam.
Senior
Michaela Transue made a diving grab to get Hofstra out of the bottom of the ninth, and followed it up with a single in the top of the 10th. Sophomore
Kristin Hallam followed suit for a pair of runners on, before Pietrafesa launched a double to the left-field wall to score two runs and give the Pride an 8-6 lead. But the Dukes once again rallied, taking the win in the bottom of the 10th.
Hofstra will play its final non-conference game of the regular season on Wednesday, heading to Rutgers for a single game at 4 p.m.
