WLAX: #19 High Point Rallies To Defeat Hofstra

Hempstead, NY - Sophomore Alyssa Parrella had four goals to tie the single season program record with 57 goals, but it wasn't enough as #19 High Point rallied in the second half to defeat the Hofstra Women's Lacrosse team, 13-9, on Thursday evening at James M. Shuart Stadium.

Parrella tied the mark established by Kathleen Mikowski in 2003. Parrella's 80 points this season are one shy of the single season record of 81 set by Brittain Altomare in 2015. She also made inroads in the career categories as Parrella now has 156 points to rank eighth all-time and 104 goals to rank ninth all-time.

Hofstra falls to 8-9 with the loss, while High Point improves to 15-2.

The Pride scored three times in the first four minutes of the game to open up an early advantage. Parrella had two of the goals, bookending a goal from senior Drew Shapiro. The Panthers used a 3-0 run of their own, including two goals from Samantha Herman, to even the score but the Pride closed the half by scoring three of the final four goals to lead 6-4 at the break. Freshman Katie Whelan, junior Jenna Budd and senior Carlee Ancona tallied the goals for Hofstra in the final 12 minutes of the half.

High Point almost immediately knotted the score to start the second half as a goal from Ashley Britton made it 6-6 with 27:01 left in regulation. Hofstra answered, though, and the Pride would take a two-goal advantage as Shapiro and Parrella each scored to put them in front 8-6 with 19:51 left. The lead would be short-lived as High Point would score six straight goals to take a commanding 12-8 lead with less than four minutes left. Parrella would score off a free-position shot with 2:55 left to tie the single season goal scoring record.

Ancona tallied a goal and two assists in her final game, while Shapiro had two goals in her last appearance in a Pride uniform. Senior Amanda Seekamp shined with four caused turnovers and four ground balls. Parrella also had eight draw controls in the game to fall one shy of her career-high. Abby Hormes led High Point with three goals, while Erica Perrotta and Maggie Williams each had two goals and an assist. Herman had eight draw controls, while Olivia Nostrant tallied four caused turnovers.

Junior Maddie Fields had nine saves and two ground balls for Hofstra, while Jill Rall had eight saves for the Panthers.

Hofstra will await the results of the Delaware/Drexel game on Friday to determine its postseason fate.
