Hempstead, N.Y. – The No. 25 Hofstra Softball team remained unbeaten in Colonial Athletic Association play with an 8-0 five-inning victory over Drexel to sweep the series on Senior Day on Sunday afternoon at Bill Edwards Stadium.
The Pride improved to 34-8 on the season and 15-0 in conference play, while Drexel dropped to 17-22-2 and 3-12 in the CAA.
Senior
Brielle Pietrafesa capped the Senior Day festivities with a two-run single up the middle to score classmates
Kaitlyne Musa and
Michaela Transue in the bottom of the fifth for the run-rule win.
Sophomore
Sarah Cornell picked up another shutout in the circle, striking out eight and allowing just three hits. Classmate
Kristin Hallam was 4-for-4 on the day, while senior
Sarah Edwards was 1-for-1 with three RBIs.
Hofstra put up five runs in the first inning, with Hallam leading off with a single right back to the pitcher. After Pietrafesa walked, she and Hallam successfully completed a double steal for runners at second and third. A walk issued to senior
Brittany Allocca loaded the bases with no outs, and
Sarah Edwards slugged a single into left field to plate two runs. The Pride capitalized on an error, before a double into deep right field from Musa capped the outburst.
Three straight singles from Transue, Hallam and Pietrafesa loaded the bases in the bottom of the fourth, and Edwards walked in a run for a 6-0 Hofstra lead.
With two outs in the bottom of the fifth, Musa walked. Transue singled up the middle, and Hallam laid down a bunt to load the bases. Pietrafesa's hit then ended the game.
The Pride is back in action on Thursday, heading to local rival Stony Brook for a non-conference game at 4 p.m.
Notes:
-Allocca had two walks on the day, tying the single-season walk record with 35.
-Cornell picked up her eighth solo shutout of the season.
-Transue extended her hitting streak to 10 games.
-Hofstra has won 14 games via run-rule this season.
-Pietrafesa's 50 RBIs on the season are tied for fourth-most in program history.
-The Pride's 16-game win streak is the second-longest in Division I.
-Hofstra went 13-1 at Bill Edwards Stadium this season.
