Stony Brook, N.Y. – Junior
Courtney Scarpato hit a three-run home run as the No. 24 Hofstra Softball team rallied from a 2-1 fifth-inning deficit to take a 5-2 win over local rival Stony Brook on Thursday evening at University Field.
The Pride (35-8) extended its win streak to 17 games, while the Seawolves fell to 19-16.
Hofstra took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second, with senior
Sarah Edwards leading off with a walk. Scarpato moved her over with a sacrifice bunt, before a single from senior
Nikki Michalowski put runners on first and third. Senior
Megan Patierno then snuck a single through the left side to plate Edwards.
Stony Brook pulled ahead in the bottom of the fifth, knotting the score on an RBI double. After loading the bases, a wild pitch brought in the second run.
With two outs in the top of the sixth, Hofstra regained the lead on a three-run home run from Scarpato after Edwards and senior
Brielle Pietrafesa had singled to put runners on first and third.
The Pride turned a double play to get out of the sixth inning, before freshman
Kimberly Wert added an insurance run in the top of the seventh with a pinch-hit home run.
Pitchers
Sarah Cornell and
Sophie Dandola (14-3) teamed up to allow just five hits, with Cornell striking out seven in 4.2 innings of work and Dandola not allowing an earned run in relief.
Hofstra heads down to James Madison this weekend for a key Colonial Athletic Association series, beginning with a doubleheader at 2 p.m. on Saturday.
Notes:
-Hofstra's 17-game win streak is the second-longest in Division I behind Drake's 22-game run.
-The Pride now has 55 home runs on the season, which is third-most in a single season in Hofstra history.
-Five of Wert's six collegiate hits have been home runs.
