SB: Hofstra Blasts Past Drexel

Hempstead, N.Y. – The Hofstra Softball team tied a program record for home runs in a single game in Game 1 and allowed just one earned run on the day in a Colonial Athletic Association doubleheader sweep of Drexel with 9-0 and 11-2 run-rule victories on Saturday afternoon at Bill Edwards Stadium.

The Pride has now won 15 straight and 23 of its past 24, improving to 33-8 on the season and 14-0 in CAA play. The Dragons fell to 17-21-2 and 3-11 in conference.

Seniors Nikki Michalowski and Megan Patierno each finished with a pair of home runs on the day, as Hofstra sent five balls over the fence in Game 1 and seven total on the day.

Game 1:
Sophomore pitcher Sarah Cornell threw a one-hitter in Game 1, striking out six for her seventh solo shutout of the season.

Senior Brittany Allocca got the Pride on the board in the bottom of the first with a solo shot to left field, her 10th homer of the season.

Hofstra then capitalized on back-to-back home runs from Michalowski and Patierno in the bottom of the fourth for a 3-0 lead.

The Pride broke the game open in the bottom of the fifth, beginning with a one-out double from Pietrafesa. Allocca brought her home with a single to center field. After starting pitcher Katie Haley issued a walk to senior Sarah Edwards, Devon Grippe entered in relief, quickly giving up a three-run homer to Michalowski with two outs for a 7-0 Hofstra advantage. Grippe then walked Patierno, and freshman Kimberly Wert came into pinch-hit, sailing her fourth pinch-hit home run of the season over the left-field fence to end the game and give the Pride the 9-0 victory.

The Dragons' lone hit was a fly ball to left-field that just barely eluded a diving Michalowski.

Game 2:
The Pride asserted its dominance early and often in Game 2, scoring two runs with no outs in the bottom of the first. Sophomore Kristin Hallam took a four-pitch walk to lead off, with Pietrafesa bringing her home with a double to left field. Pietrafesa then scored on the same play as the Dragons misplayed a relay throw to home.

Hofstra tacked on another run in the bottom of the third with a leadoff homer from senior Kaitlyne Musa, her first of the season.

A six-run bottom of the third began with a leadoff walk to Edwards. With runners on first and second, Patierno doubled to left field to plate one run. Musa followed up with a single to center to add another. A walk to redshirt-senior Michaela Transue loaded the bases, and Pietrafesa cleared them with a three-run double off the wall in center. Allocca added an RBI double to left to cap the inning with a 9-0 Pride lead.

Drexel scored an unearned run in the top of the fourth on a sacrifice fly from Janelle Ladrido.

Patierno added a two-run homer in the bottom of the fourth to cushion Hofstra's lead. Drexel scored a run in the top of the fifth, but Linda Rush grounded into a double play in which Hallam corralled the ball while sliding into second before firing to first for the second out.

Freshman Sophie Dandola picked up her 13th win in the circle, allowing just one earned run.

The Pride closes the series with Drexel at 12 p.m. on Sunday at Bill Edwards Stadium. Hofstra will honor its seven seniors in a ceremony beginning approximately 30 minutes before first pitch.
