Brooklyn, N.Y. – The No. 25 Hofstra Softball team recorded its 13th straight win a 13-4, six-inning victory over LIU Brooklyn on Wednesday evening at LIU Field.
The Pride (31-8) took control early, putting up seven runs in the top of the first. After walks to seniors
Brielle Pietrafesa and
Brittany Allocca, junior
Courtney Scarpato drove in the first run with a base hit up the middle. Two more walks plated another, before senior
Kaitlyne Musa hit a two-run single. With the bases loaded on the fifth walk of the inning, a wild pitch brought in a run. Sophomore
Kristin Hallam then capped the first-inning scoring with a two-run double smacked into left-center.
The Blackbirds (15-24) got on the board in the bottom of the second on a solo home run from Rylee Bermea.
Hallam doubled to lead off the top of the fourth, before Pietrafesa followed suit to drive in another run. Senior
Sarah Edwards added another double, but LIU Brooklyn made the throw to the plate in time to prevent another run.
A two-run home run from Victoria Zamora in the bottom of the fourth cut Hofstra's lead to 8-3. After the Blackbirds hit a third homer, freshman
Sophie Dandola entered in relief, closing the fifth inning.
The Pride responded with back-to-back homers in the top of the sixth from Pietrafesa and Allocca. The pair of seniors stayed tied at fourth all-time in program history with 32 career home runs each. After a walk loaded the bases, another to Musa increased the lead to 11-4. Redshirt-senior
Michaela Transue then drilled a hard-hit double to left field to plate two more for the final 13-4 score.
Hofstra returns to Bill Edwards Stadium this weekend, hosting Drexel for the final home series of the season. The series begins with a doubleheader at 2 p.m. on Saturday, closing with a single game at 12 p.m. on Sunday. The Pride's seven-member senior class will be honored prior to Sunday's game.
