SB: #25 Hofstra Extends Win Streak To 12

Hempstead, N.Y. – The No. 25 Hofstra Softball team swept a doubleheader with Wagner on Tuesday evening, winning Game 1, 2-0, before exploding for a 16-1 five-inning rout in Game 2 at Bill Edwards Stadium.

With the victories, Hofstra extended its win streak to 12 games and has now won 20 of its past 21, improving to 30-8 on the season. The Seahawks dropped to 12-23.

Both Hofstra pitchers had strong outings in the circle, with sophomore Sarah Cornell striking out 11 and allowing just two hits in Game 1 for the shutout before freshman Sophie Dandola fanned a career-high 10 batters and allowed just four hits in Game 2.

Senior Nikki Michalowski was 3-for-6 on the day with a grand slam in Game 2.

Game 1:
Only one baserunner reached in the first two innings of Game 1 before the Pride got on the board in the bottom of the third.

Senior Kaitlyne Musa and redshirt-senior Michaela Transue each singled before sophomore Kristin Hallam was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Senior Brielle Pietrafesa then dropped a single into shallow right field to bring a run home. A walk to classmate Brittany Allocca with the bases still loaded gave Hofstra the 2-0 lead.

Cornell struck out the side for the second time in the top of the fourth as both offenses were kept at bay for the remainder of the game.

Game 2:
The Hofstra offense then exploded in Game 2, putting up nine runs in the second inning and seven in the fourth.

The Pride used a pair of Wagner errors to get runners on in the bottom of the second before a double from Musa brought in two runs. A walk to Transue and a single from Hallam loaded the bases for Pietrafesa, who drove in a run with a single to left field. Allocca got her second walk RBI of the day before senior Sarah Edwards sent a three-run triple into deep left. Junior Courtney Scarpato plated two more with a home run to left field to give Hofstra the 9-0 lead.

The Seahawks used three singles in the top of the fourth to plate a run, while Dandola recorded three more strikeouts in the inning.

The Pride once again excelled offensively in the bottom of the fourth, beginning with a one-out single from Allocca and a walk to Edwards. Freshman Kimberly Wert used a pinch-hit single to load the bases before an error plated a run. Michalowski then sent a shot to left-field to clear the bases and increase the Pride's lead. Singles from Transue and freshman Devyn Losco then set Hallam up for a two-run double to left-field for the 16-1 lead.

Hofstra sealed the win in the top of the fifth, with Hallam recording the third out by scooping up a hit ball at shortstop and sliding into second to beat the runner to the bag.

The Pride hits the road to LIU Brooklyn on Wednesday for a single non-conference game at 4 p.m.
