Justin Wright-Foreman had 29 points, six assists and five rebounds, while senior
Rokas Gustys tallied 12 points and 10 rebounds but it wasn't enough as UNCW rallied for a 93-88 victory over the Hofstra Men's Basketball team on Sunday evening in the quarterfinals of the Colonial Athletic Association Championship at the North Charleston Coliseum.
The loss moves Hofstra to 19-12 on the year and ends a four-game win streak in the process. UNCW improved to 11-20 with the victory and advances to the semifinals. Jordan Talley poured in 37 points and added seven assists and five rebounds to lead the Seahawks to the win.
Hofstra scored the first four points of the game as Gustys opened the scoring and Wright-Foreman followed to make it 4-0 early on. The Seahawks responded with a 12-0 run to take an eight-point advantage with 14:52 left in the opening stanza after a Jay Estime basket. The Pride gradually chipped away and knotted the score at 18 on a three-pointer from Wright-Foreman at the 10:03 mark. The score was tied at 21 before Hofstra made its first significant run of the contest, using an 14-3 run to earn a 35-24 lead with 5:30 left before halftime. Freshman
Jalen Ray keyed the run with seven points, while senior
Hunter Sabety added a pair of dunks to get it started. Hofstra would take an eight-point lead into the break as the two teams exchanged three-pointers in the final minute to account for the last points of the half.
UNCW scored the first four points of the second half to close the gap to 48-44 before a three-pointer from Wright-Foreman stemmed the tide for the moment and made it 51-44 with 18:52 to play. The Pride would still hold a 56-47 advantage with just over 17 minutes left in regulation before the Seahawks rallied with a 19-5 run to retake the lead at 66-61 with 11:12 to play after a jumper from Talley. Fueled by the CAA Player of the Year, Hofstra rebounded and got seven straight points from Wright-Foreman to go back in front at 74-73 with 5:40 left.
The back-and-forth affair would see Hofstra hold a 79-77 advantage with 3:41 to play after a tip-in from Gustys before Talley converted a three-point play to make it 80-79 in favor of the Seahawks with 3:35 showing on the clock. That would give UNCW the lead for good as the Seahawks kept the Pride at bay the remainder of the contest and earned the five-point victory.
Junior
Desure Buie tied his career-high with 20 points, while Ray chipped in with 16 points for the Pride. Devontae Cacok added 17 points and nine rebounds for UNCW.
NOTES
- Hofstra is 19-21 all-time against UNCW. The two teams split the regular season meetings with each winning by 20 points on their respective home courts.
- Gustys has 1,305 career rebounds. He became only the second player in CAA history to grab at least 1,300 rebounds.
- Wright-Foreman now has 1,379 points to move into 13th place all-time at Hofstra. Gustys has 1,184. He is in 25th place all-time.
