Elon, N.C. – The Hofstra Softball team took a pair of wins over Elon on Saturday afternoon, 10-1 and 5-1, in a Colonial Athletic Association doubleheader at Hunt Softball Park.
Seniors
Sarah Edwards,
Megan Patierno and
Nikki Michalowski each finished with four hits on the day, with Patierno leading the way with four RBIs and Michalowski picking up three. Seven different members of the Pride (20-8, 5-0 CAA) recorded RBIs on the day and six had multiple hits as Hofstra put up 12 hits in each win, with the Phoenix falling to 18-15 and 2-3 in CAA play.
Game 1:
The Pride drew first blood, getting on the board in the top of the second inning after junior
Courtney Scarpato walked, and senior
Megan Patierno doubled to left field to bring in Scarpato.
Senior
Sarah Edwards singled in the top of the fourth before classmate
Nikki Michalowski launched her first home run of the season into left-center for a 3-0 Hofstra lead.
The Pride put up four runs in the top of the fifth. Singles from sophomore
Kristin Hallam and Edwards and a walk from senior
Brittany Allocca put runners on, and Scarpato and Patierno each hit two-run singles.
The Phoenix pulled a run back in the bottom of the sixth on an Erica Serafini home run.
Senior
Brielle Pietrafesa's team-leading sixth home run opened a three-run top of the seventh. Edwards then doubled for her third hit of the game before two-out RBI hits from senior
Kaitlyne Musa and redshirt-senior
Michaela Transue capped the 10-1 win.
Sophomore
Sarah Cornell (11-5) pitched the complete-game victory, allowing six hits and striking out three.
Game 2:
Michalowski's second home run of the day gave the Pride a 1-0 lead in the top of the second, but Elon answered in the bottom of the inning, with Ally Repko sending a long ball to nearly the same spot in left field to knot the score at one.
Hofstra took the lead back in the top of the third. Transue singled to lead off, and Pietrafesa brought her home with an RBI single dropped into left field.
The Phoenix threatened to take the lead in the bottom of the fifth, putting runners on second and third with one out. The second out came as a flyout, and right fielder Pietrafesa threw down to Musa at home to prevent the sacrifice fly. Freshman pitcher
Sophie Dandola then threw her fourth strikeout of the day to escape the inning with the lead.
Edwards doubled to lead off the top of the sixth, and Patierno picked up her fourth RBI of the day with a single up the middle. Freshman
Kimberly Wert came in to pinch-hit, and after battling through a long at-bat, homered to left field to give Hofstra a 5-1 lead.
The Pride close the series with Elon on Sunday at 12 p.m. at Hunt Softball Park.
Notes:
-Wert has three hits in her collegiate career, and all three are home runs.
-Pietrafesa, Transue and Hallam each finished the day with three hits.
-The Pride has allowed two runs or fewer in 19 of its 28 games.
-Hofstra has reached the 20-win mark for the 28th consecutive season.
-The Pride remains the only team unbeaten in CAA play in just the second weekend of conference play.
-Hofstra went 12-4 in the month of March.
