SB: Hofstra Rally Falls Short Against Fordham

Hempstead, N.Y. – The Hofstra Softball team drove in runs in the sixth and seventh innings but came up one short in a 3-2 loss to local rival Fordham on Wednesday afternoon at Bill Edwards Stadium.

The Pride fell to 18-8 on the season, after winning their last eight straight, while the Rams improved to 13-15.

After sophomore pitcher Sarah Cornell worked out of jams in the first and second innings, Fordham capitalized in the third with a pair of runs. The first came in on an obstruction call at the plate on a Maddie Aughinbaugh double, before Maria Trivelpiece added an RBI single to bring home Aughinbaugh.

The Rams made it a 3-0 game in the fourth on a Chelsea Skrepenak home run.

Hofstra attempted to climb out of the hole, getting on the board in the bottom of the sixth when an error in left field on a single from junior Courtney Scarapto allowed redshirt-junior Lydia Witkowski to come home.

Redshirt-senior Michaela Transue tried to spark a seventh-inning rally, homering to right-center with one out. Senior Brittany Allocca then walked with two outs to bring the winning run to the plate, but Fordham escaped unscathed.

Hofstra hits the road this weekend, heading to Elon for a three-game Colonial Athletic Association series beginning with a doubleheader at 1 p.m. on Saturday and followed by a single game at 1 p.m. on Sunday.

Notes:
-Transue's homer was her first of the season after missing all of last season due to injury. She also singled in the bottom of the third.
-Junior Courtney Scarpato was 2-for-2 on the day.
-Cornell struck out four in four innings in the loss.
-Hofstra leads the all-time series with Fordham, 10-5. The teams have now traded 3-2 wins on the other's home field in the past two meetings.
