MLAX: Hofstra Falls At St. John's On A Last Minute Goal

Jamaica, NY – Hofstra freshman Dylan McIntosh tallied a season-high six goals but Red Storm junior Colin Duffy's goal with 0:03 remaining on the clock gave St. John 's a 9-8 victory over the 19th-ranked Pride at DaSilva Memorial Field Saturday afternoon.

Hofstra, which dropped its second consecutive contest, slips to 4-4 on the season as the Pride head into the Colonial Athletic Association schedule next week. St. John's, which won its fourth consecutive game, improved to 6-2 on the season.

McIntosh, a newcomer from Pitt Meadows, BC, Canada, topped his previous best of four goals set at Providence last Saturday with the six goals. Sophomore Ryan Tierney added three assists while senior Brendan Kavanagh added a goal and one assist. Senior Trevor Kupecky tallied the other Pride goal. Senior Jack Concannon made 10 saves in the Hofstra goal.

The Red Storm were led by Joe Madsen with three goals, Jason DeBenedictis with two goals and Declan Swartwood and Colin Duffy each with a  goal and an assist. Matt Hanley made 12 saves in the Red Storm goal for the victory.

With McIntosh scoring the Pride's first six goals, Hofstra tallied four of the first five goals in the contest to build a 4-1 lead just 1:16 into the second quarter. The two teams then split the next six goals with Kupecky's man-up goal 3:27 into the third quarter boosting the Pride lead to 7-4.

The Red Storm got two goals back in a 17-second span as Madsen scored on the man-up and Justin Corpolongo denting the twine to close to 7-6 with 7:03 to play in the quarter. But Kavanagh gave the Pride some breathing room with his eighth goal of the year less than two minutes later as Hofstra held on to an 8-6 lead after three quarters.

But the fourth quarter was all the Red Storm. Hanley made four of his 12 saves in the period and for the second consecutive game Hofstra was blanked in the fourth. St. John's tied the game at 8-8 on goals by Mike Madsen and Joe Madsen in the first 4:06 on the quarter. The score remained that way until Duffy came around back of the goal and beat Concannon with the game-winning shot.

Hofstra returns to action next Saturday, March 31 when the Pride host defending CAA champions, the Towson Tigers at James M. Shuart Stadium in the conference opener. Game time is 1 p.m.
