WLAX: Hofstra Routs Central Connecticut State

New Britain, CT - Sophomore Alexa Mattera tied for game-high honors with four goals and added a career-high nine draw controls to lead the Hofstra Women's Lacrosse team to an easy 15-3 victory over Central Connecticut State on Friday evening at Arute Field.

Hofstra, which also got four goals from freshman Katie Whelan, improved to 5-4 with its second straight win. The Blue Devils fell to 1-7 with the loss.

It was all Mattera early on as she scored the Pride's first two goals to stake Hofstra to a 2-0 lead nearly seven minutes into the contest. The Pride extended its game-opening advantage to four goals as sophomore Mary Kate Gerety and junior Tessa Sinatro added to the run. Hofstra added a pair of 3-0 scoring runs over the rest of the opening stanza, including goals sophomore Alyssa Parrella and two from Whelan to close the half and make it 10-2 at the break.

Senior Carlee Ancona opened the second half scoring with 27:30 showing on the clock to push the lead to nine before Carson Adelberger scored for CCSU. The Pride would hold the Blue Devils scoreless the remainder of the contest, and to just one goal over the final 39:50 of the game, as they went on to cruise to another convincing win. Hofstra scored the final four goals of the game, including two from Mattera and goals from senior Amanda Seekamp and Whelan.

Parrella finished with two goals, two assists and four draw controls for Hofstra, while Ancona and junior Jenna Budd each tallied a goal and an assist. Sophomore Darcie Smith had five ground balls in the game and Ancona notched four ground balls. Adelberger had two goals for Central Connecticut State and Cameron Ruberti had three ground balls.
