WLAX: Hofstra Drops Home Tilt To Dartmouth

Hempstead, NY - Sophomore Alexa Mattera had four goals and a pair of draw controls for the Hofstra Women's Lacrosse team, but Dartmouth raced out to a big halftime advantage and would record a 17-9 victory over the Pride on Friday evening at James M. Shuart Stadium.

Hofstra falls to 3-4 with the loss, while Dartmouth improved to 4-1 with its fourth straight victory.

The Big Green won 11 of the 16 draw controls in the first half and that advantage helped them jump out to an 8-0 lead 10 minutes into the contest. Hofstra would get on the board at the 13:57 mark as Mattera scored her first of the game off a free-position shot. The Pride would close the gap to seven, 10-3, later in the half as seniors Drew Shapiro and Carlee Ancona found the back of the net.

Dartmouth used a 4-0 scoring run spanning the halves to break open the game before Hofstra gradually chipped away at the deficit. The Pride would tally six of the final nine goals in the game as Mattera had three during the run and was aided by sophomore Mary Kate Gerety and freshmen Arianna Esposito and Katie Whelan

Sophomore Darcie Smith posted three draw controls, two ground balls and two caused turnovers in the game for the Pride. Whelan also had three draw controls, while freshman Shannon Boyle posted three ground balls and two caused turnovers. Elizabeth Mastrio led Dartmouth with six points on four goals and two assists, while Kiera Sweeney also had four goals for the Big Green.

Hofstra is back in action on Tuesday when it hosts Columbia at 4 p.m.
