MSOC: Hofstra Storms Into CAA Semifinals

Hempstead, NY - Sophomore Storm Strongin sent a perfect service into the box and fellow sophomore Matthew Vowinkel headed in the eventual game-winner in the 52nd minute as the Hofstra Men's Soccer team advanced to the Colonial Athletic Association semifinals with a 1-0 victory over Northeastern in the CAA Quarterfinals on Saturday evening at Hofstra Soccer Stadium.

With the win, Hofstra advances to the CAA semifinals on Friday, November 9 where it will face UNCW. That game will take place in Harrisonburg, Virginia and begin at 4 p.m.

The win improves Hofstra's record to 9-6-4 this season, while Northeastern falls to 6-9-1.

It was all Hofstra in the first half as the Pride outshot the Huskies, 8-0, but Hofstra was unable to find the back of the net and game remained scoreless at the break.

The Pride would finally break into the scoring column in the 52nd minute as Vowinkel scored his team-leading seventh goal of the season to put Hofstra infront. Northeastern would mount some incredible pressure late in the contest as they looked to even the score, but senior Alex Ashton made a huge save with just under two minutes remaining to preserve the lead. Hofstra's backline prevented a serious scoring opportunity nine seconds later to preserve the victory.

Ashton played all 90 minutes and made four saves for the Pride. The clean sheet was Hofstra's 11th of the season.

Chandler Cree made five saves for Northeastern and Dan Munch had three shots for the Huskies.

Hofstra and UNCW had a scoreless tie back on September 22.

NOTES
- Hofstra is now 8-14-2 all-time against Northeastern. The win avenged a 3-0 loss at Northeastern back on October 10.
- Junior Luke Brown led Hofstra with four shots.
- The Pride had 12 corners to Northeastern's 4.
