NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Hofstra University women's basketball team battled Marist on day two of the Challenge in Music City, however Marist came away with the victory, 71-57 at the Nashville Municipal Auditorium on Saturday.
Hofstra falls to 2-4 on the season while Marist improves its best starting mark in program history to 5-0.
Ana Hernandez Gil notched 16 points, the most points for the junior since she set a career-high of 18 against Massachusetts in December 2016. Hernandez Gil's 16 points came on a 6-of-15 effort from the floor (.400) including a season-high four three-pointers. Following Hernandez Gil in double figures for the fifth-straight game was senior
Boogie Brozoski, who net 11 points on the day, while junior
Marianne Kalin closed out the day shooting 3-of-5 from field goal range and 4-of-6 from the stripe for 10 points, her second game this season in double figures.
Despite being limited to just five points on the contest, senior
Sica Cuzic led the Pride on the glass with six rebounds, three on each end. Sophomore
Jaylen Hines tallied five boards and chipped in six points, shooting 2-of-2 from field goal range and 2-of-2 from the free throw line. Marist's
Rebekah Hand was the leading scorer for the Red Foxes, as she led all scorers with 20 points.
Marist got out to a lead as many as six in the first quarter before Brozoski hit a three-pointer with under a minute remaining to close the gap to three points. Hofstra began the second quarter with two-straight baskets, as freshman
JaKayla Brown's layup and Hernandez Gil's three gave the Pride its first lead of the contest, 18-16. The game went back and forth for a good portion of the second quarter, as it saw four lead changes and two ties within five minute of action. Marist closed out the second frame with a 13-4 run over the last four and a half minutes, pulling away from the Pride at the break.
After Marist went on to outscore Hofstra, 24-13 in the third stanza, the Pride answered with a 17-12 fourth period. Kalin went on an early 4-0 run of her own within 20 seconds to cut into the Red Fox lead before eventually adding four more points in the last 10 minutes of action to grab eight of her 10 points in the fourth quarter. Hofstra held the Red Foxes scoreless for the final three minutes of action with a 5-0 run but it was not enough as Marist earned its fifth victory of the season.
Hofstra will close out action at the Challenge in Music City tomorrow, Sunday November 25, against Stetson. Tip-off from the Nashville Municipal Auditorium is slated for 1:00 pm EST/ 12:00 CST. For fans who are unable to attend, live stats and Pride Productions live audio will be available.
