MBB: Hofstra Tripped Up By Northeastern

Hempstead, NY - Rokas Gustys had his ninth double-double of the season and the 43rd of his career and Justin Wright-Foreman scored 20 points but Northeastern shot 53-percent from the field and had five players in double figures to pick up an 81-67 Colonial Athletic Association victory Thursday night at the David S. Mack Sports and Exhibition Complex.

Gustys tallied 13 points on 6-6 shooting and added 10 rebounds. Eli Pemberton also scored in double figures for Hofstra as the sophomore chipped in 10 points and five rebounds.

Hofstra, which suffered its second loss in as many games, slipped to 12-9 overall and 5-4 in the CAA. Northeastern won its fourth consecutive contest to improve to 14-7 overall and 7-2 in league play.

Northeastern opened up a 12-6 lead five minutes into the game before the Pride used a 6-0 run to tie the game at 12 with 12:11 to play in the half on a Kenny Wormley layup. The run extended to eight before the Huskies tied the game at 14 with 9:40 to go. With the score tied at 16, Northeastern would go on a 10-0 run to take a 26-16 lead with 4:45 to play on a pair of Bolden Brace free throws. The Pride trailed 31-22 with 2:54 when Wright-Foreman scored five straight points to make it a four point deficit, 31-27, with 2:02 to go.  Northeastern would outscore the Pride, 5-3, in the final minutes to take a 36-30 lead at the half.

Northeastern began the second half nearly the same way it began the first, outscoring Hofstra by a 10-5 margin to take a 46-35 lead with 16:52 on the clock. The Pride would cut the lead to seven 49-42, with 14:19 on the clock on a Gustys layup, but the Huskies answered each of Hofstra's comeback attempts. But the Pride kept working and pulled to within five, 57-52, with 9:04 to go on a steal and dunk from Gustys. But Northeastern answered once again, this time with a 5-1 run to go up by a 62-53 margin with 6:28 remaining on two more free throws from Brace. The Pride would not get closer than eight points the rest of the way.

The Huskies balanced scoring was led by Shawn Occeus and Vasa Pusica, who each had 16 points. Pusica also added a career-high 10 assists. Brace and Anthony Green added 14 points each. The pair added 10 and 12 rebounds, respectively, as well. Donnell Gresham rounded out the double digit scorers for Northeastern with 11 points.

The Pride will be back in action Saturday night when it travels to Newark, Delaware, for a 7 p.m. matchup against the Fightin' Blue Hens of the University of Delaware.
