Hempstead, NY - The Hofstra University completed a successful Hofstra Pride Invitational by winning championships in three of the six flights and reaching the finals in five of the six flights.
Jan Leithner (A singles),
Nick Silvestri (D singles) and
Niko Vulinovich and
Corentin Haener (A doubles) each won titles, while
Corentin Haener (B singles),
David Schrott (C singles) and the team of Schrott and Silvestri (B doubles) lost in the finals.
Leithner bested Eric Poland of Wagner, 8-6, in the quarterfinals; Dylan Walters of Wagner, 8-2, in the semifinals and Fairleigh Dickinson's Moric Budinszky, 9-7, in the finals.
Silvestri defeated Pablo Blasco of St. Francis Brooklyn, 8-3, in the quarterfinals and followed that with an 8-1 win over Oneonta's Marco Ammirati in the semifinals. Silvestri defeated another Oneonta player, Tyler Nierman, in the finals by an 8-1 score to claim his first singles title with the Pride.
Vulinovich and Haener won their flight for the second time in as many tries, posting a pair of wins Saturday. The duo downed Budinszky and Billy Bourne of FDU in the semifinals, 7-6 (6), and then picked up a hard-fought 7-6 (8) win over Adam Chan and Niclas Pietsch of FDU in the finals. Haener and Vulinovich will look to continue their winning ways at the ITA All-American National Championships in Tulsa, Oklahoma, starting on October 2.
Notes:
-Haener won a pair of matches at B singles before falling in the finals to Hans Ohrner of Wagner.
-Schrott won two matches Saturday before falling to Wagner's Charlton Boyd in the C singles final.
