MTEN: Five Singles Players, Two Doubles Teams Advance At Pride Invitational

Hempstead, NY – Five Hofstra singles players advanced to the quarterfinals of their respective flights and two doubles teams advanced to the semifinals after day one of the Hofstra Pride Invitational Friday.

Niko Vulinovich and Jan Leithner each won their round of 16 matches at the A singles flight to reach the quarterfinals. Vulinovich posted a 6-3, 6-4 win over St. Francis Brooklyn's Guillermo Artiz. Leithner rallied from a set down to post a 5-7, 6-0, 10-4 victory over Alejandro Ridruejo of Saint Francis Brooklyn.

Corentin Haener advanced to the B singles quarterfinals with a 7-5, 6-1 victory over Zach Lasky of Oneonta, while David Schrott picked up a 6-0, 6-1 win over James Garzia of Oneonta at C singles to move on to the quarterfinals.

Nick Silvestri will play in the D singles quarterfinals after receiving a bye in the round of 16. In addition, Santiago Haas is leading his round of 16 match at C singles against Oneonta's Tim Distler, 6-0, 3-2. The match was suspended due to darkness and will be completed Saturday morning.

In doubles, Vulinovich and Haener had a first round bye and then won an A doubles quarterfinal match against Saint Francis Brooklyn's Javier Navarro and Adolfo Blanco, 6-4. Schrott and Silvestri won a pair of matches at B doubles, defeating St. Francis Brooklyn's Josh Halperin and Tim Cecere in the round of 16 (6-1) and Wagner's Dylan Walters and Eric Poland (6-4) in the quarterfinals.

Play continues Saturday morning at 8:30.

Notes:
-Marcus Smith dropped his first round A singles match to Walters (Wagner), 6-1, 6-3.
-Smith and Leithner were 1-1 in doubles, winning 6-4 over Oneonta's Nick Fox ad Joe D'Orazio in the round of 16 and losing in the quarterfinals, 6-2 to Fordham's Fabian Mauritzson and Lutwin De Macar.
