New York, NY - The Hofstra University Women's Tennis team will have two singles players –
Jasmine King and
Odessa Stork – and the doubles team of King and
Sarah Catherine Herndon still in action on Sunday after the first two days of the Columbia Invitational. All are competing in the consolation brackets.
In the Queens Draw (B Singles),
Michal Kaplan dropped her opening round match in three sets (6-1, 2-6, 6-3) to Ali Pollack of Columbia. The junior then fell in straight sets (6-1, 6-2) to Sabrina Faybyshev of Boston University in the consolation round.
Alejandra Ruffini fell in her first round match in the Staten Island Draw (C Singles) to Columbia's Andrea Kevakian (6-3, 6-1). Ruffini then bowed out of the tournament with a 6-4, 6-4 loss to Penn's Jennifer Richards in the consolation bracket.
King lost her first round match in three sets (6-0, 3-6, 6-2) to Columbia's Andi Milstein in the Bronx Draw (D Singles) before advancing to the consolations finals with a win over Irina Preotescu of St. John's. The Pride sophomore dropped the first set (1-6) before storming back to win set two by a 6-2 score. That set up a decisive third set tiebreak, which was won by King, 10-6. King will face Ojasvinee Singh of Penn in the finals.
In the Manhattan Draw (E Singles), the Pride had three competitors fall in tough three-set matches.
Disha Yellayi lost to Nina Marjanovic of St. John's (5-7, 6-4, 7-6 (2)); Stork fell to the Red Storm's Delia Arranz (6-3, 2-6, 6-2); and Herndon lost to Clara Falxa of Boston University (7-6, 4-6, 6-4). Stork did win her consolation match over Nicole Berkman of Penn (2-6, 6-4, 10-4). Yellayi and Herndon each dropped their consolation matches, to Lily O'Fagen (BU) and Zofia Stanisz (St. John's), respectively. Stork will play in the consolation semifinals Sunday.
In the A Doubles bracket, the teams of Herndon and King and Kaplan and Yellayi each lost their first round matches. Herndon and King fell to Columbia's Jennifer Kerr and Paulina Ferrari, 6-1, while Kaplan and Yellayi dropped a 6-0 decision to the St. John's tandem of Jessica Livianu and Kajsa Stegrell.
Ruffini and Stork lost their opening B Doubles match to Sarah Hu and Ali Pollack, 6-0, but did advance to the semifinals of the consolation round when their scheduled opponents from Boston University were forced to retire.
In C Doubles, the team of
Ronia Dolabany and
Meheq Khokhar dropped a 6-1 decision to Boston University's Lily Burchell and Katya Martens and then lost by the same score to Penn's Singh and Jimena Rodriguez Benito in the consolation round.
