WSOC: Hofstra Plays To Draw At Columbia

New York, N.Y. – Senior Kristin Desmond scored the Hofstra Women Soccer team's first goal of the season as the Pride played to a 1-1 tie with Columbia at Rocco B. Commisso Soccer Stadium on Friday night.

Hofstra (0-2-1) had the first quality chance of the game, with Sabrina Bryan's shot being saved on the goal line by a Columbia defender, but the Lions (0-0-1) struck first. Amaris Hemmings knocked in a shot from the right side off a header by Caroline Militello to give Columbia a 1-0 lead with 16:22 left in the first half.

After junior Sabrina Barton was taken down inside the 18-yard box, Desmond tucked the resulting penalty kick into the right side of the net past a diving Sophie Whitehouse to knot the score at one with just under 10 minutes to play in the first half.

The Lions had a handful of chances to take the game late in regulation, with a shot ringing off the crossbar before the rebound came back at Hofstra goalkeeper Ashley Wilson. Both teams exchanged opportunities through both overtimes, but neither was able to break through.

Hofstra concludes its four-game road trip Sunday afternoon with a 4 p.m. matchup at Boston University.
