BB: Hofstra Falls To William & Mary In Season Finale

Hempstead, NY - Rob Weissheier had a three-run home run but Hofstra managed just two hits on the day as William & Mary completed a Colonial Athletic Association series sweep with a 5-3 win over the Pride Saturday at University Field.

Hofstra sees its season end at 14-37 overall and 7-17 in the CAA. William & Mary moves into the CAA Championship with a 31-23 record overall and 15-8 in league play.

The Tribe struck first, stringing together three consecutive singles in the second inning to plate one run as Ryan Hall knocked in Charles Ameer. The Tribe tacked on three more runs in the fourth with Hunter Smith and Kyle Smith driving in runs with singles, and Brandon Raquet delivering an RBI double.

William & Mary starter Daniel Powers faced the minimum over four innings, allowing just one hit. Reliever Aaron Fernandez followed with two innings of no-hit ball, allowing two walks. Chris Farrell relieved Fernandez in the seventh and walked a pair of batters before surrendering the three-run shot to Weissheier that made the score, 4-3.

The Tribe answered in the eighth as Matthew Tilley drew a leadoff walk and came in on a triple from Kyle Wrighte. But Chris Weiss was able to retire the next three batters without any further damage.

Fernandez picked up the win for William & Mary to improve to 2-3 on the season.

Hofstra starter Teddy Cillis (0-10) took the loss after allowing four runs on 11 hits in seven innings. Cillis did have six strikeouts to bring his season total to a school record 96.

Chris Hardardt had the only other hit for the Pride, a fourth inning single.

Ameer had three hits to leads William & Mary, while Hall and Wrighte each had a pair of hits.

Prior to the game, Hofstra recognized its six graduating seniors – Chris Hardardt, David Leiderman, Jorge Marrero, Kieran Ryan, Matt Weissheier and Brad Witkowski.
