Hempstead, N.Y. – Hofstra Softball battled with Delaware, but fell, 6-4, on Sunday afternoon at Bill Edwards Stadium. With a doubleheader sweep on Saturday, the Pride won the Colonial Athletic Association series, 2-1, and moved to 14-16 overall and 4-4 in conference play.
Junior
Sarah Edwards had a pair of doubles, while classmates
Megan Patierno and
Brittany Allocca each homered for the Pride.
The Blue Hens (17-16, 5-4 CAA) took the lead in the top of the first, taking advantage of a wild pitch before Anna Steinmetz hit her CAA-leading 10th home run of the season for a 2-0 advantage.
After allowing a pair of singles in the top of the second, freshman pitcher
Sarah Cornell worked out of the jam, getting a fly out, catching Miranda O'Donald looking and getting a ground-out to end the inning.
Hofstra pulled even in the bottom of the second, with Allocca leading off with her second home run of the weekend, sending a blast to left-center. Edwards hit her first double of the game with one out. Sophomore
Courtney Scarpato and freshman
Kristin Hallam followed up with singles, with Hallam's effort bringing Edwards home to knot the score at two.
Delaware hit two more singles in the top of the third, but Cornell's defense helped her out of the inning, with Patierno snagging a line drive and firing to
Lacey Clark at second to turn the double play.
Patierno hit her third home run of the series, a solo shot to left field, in the bottom of the third, giving the Pride a 3-2 lead.
The Blue Hens regained the lead, scoring three runs in the top of the fourth, capitalizing on some defensive miscues by the Pride for a 5-3 lead.
The Pride pulled a run back in the bottom of the fourth, with Edwards leading off with a double to the center-wall. Hallam reached on an error, as the second baseman bobbled the ball, and junior
Brielle Pietrafesa's single to center brought Edwards home for her second run of the afternoon.
Freshman pitcher
Alyssa Irons, who had relieved Cornell with one out in the fourth, faced just three batters in the top of the sixth, getting the first out on a ground out to Allocca at first. After the second batter reached, Clark caught a lineout and fired to Allocca at first for the double play.
But Delaware sealed the victory in the top of the seventh, with Alyshia Dellatore safely stealing home with runners on the corners attempting the double steal.
In 3.2 innings pitched, Irons allowed three hits and no earned runs.
The Pride is back in action on Tuesday with a non-conference trip to Seton Hall. Game time is set for 4 p.m.
