SB: Hofstra Falls In Close Battle With Seton Hall

South Orange, N.J. – Hofstra Softball fell to Seton Hall on a walk-off double on Tuesday afternoon at Mike Sheppard, Sr. Field.

The Pride (14-17, 4-4 CAA) took a 3-2 lead into the seventh inning after a back-and-forth battle that saw three lead changes.

Sophomore Courtney Scarpato was 2-for-2 on the day with a home run, while junior Brittany Allocca added her homer of the season. Hofstra has now hit multiple home runs in six of its past seven games and has 16 of its 23 total home runs over the past 10 games.

Seton Hall got on the board first, with Lauren Fischer sending a solo shot over the left-field fence for a 1-0 lead.

The Pride strung together a pair of hits with two outs in the top of the first, with junior Kaitlyne Musa sending a single into left field before Scarpato found the gap between first and second, but a grounder to third base ending the inning.

Freshman pitcher Alyssa Irons threw a pair of strikeouts in the bottom of the second before pitching the game's first clean inning in the bottom of the third, getting all three batters to hit into ground-outs. Two more strikeouts helped Irons retire the side in order once again in the bottom of the fourth.

Scarpato's first career home run, a blast into left field, knotted the game at one in the top of the fifth. Freshman Kristin Hallam followed up with a single, advancing to second on a ground-out and stealing third. With two outs, Nikki Michalowski put the ball in play and beat out the throw to first to bring Hallam home for a 2-1 Hofstra lead.

A home run from Noel Lent quickly tied the game back at two in the bottom of the fifth, but junior Brittany Allocca's lead-off long ball to left-center got the lead back for the Pride in the top of the sixth.

Irons threw another clean inning in the bottom of the sixth before senior Jessica Peslak came in to the game in the seventh. With runners on first and second, Alyssa Prukop came in to pinch-hit and sent a double to the left-field wall for the win.

Hofstra is back in action Wednesday, hosting local rival LIU Brooklyn for a 6 p.m. game at Bill Edwards Stadium.
