Josh Byrne recorded four goals and one assist and sophomore
Jimmy Yanes added three goals and one assist as the fourth-ranked Hofstra Pride remained undefeated with an 11-9 Colonial Athletic Association victory over Delaware at Delaware Stadium Saturday afternoon.
Hofstra improved to 10-0 overall and 2-0 in the CAA this season. Hofstra is the last remaining undefeated team in Division I following Penn State's 15-11 loss to Maryland today. Delaware is 7-5 overall and 0-2 in league play.
Byrne tallied his sixth game with three goals or more this season as he now has 29 for the season while his five points give him 50 on the year. Yanes tied his season-bests with three goals and four points. Junior
Alex Moeser also equaled season-highs with two goals and three points while freshman
Ryan Tierney chipped in with a goal and two assists. Pride junior goalie
Jack Concannon made nine saves in the game including seven in the first half.
Delaware was led by graduate-student Steve DeLargy with three goals and one assist while sophomore Andrew Romagnoli added three goals. Freshman goalie Matt Deluca made seven saves in the UD cage.
Hofstra jumped out quickly to a 2-0 lead with Byrne scoring his 26th of the year off a pass from Moeser just 1:48 into the game. Moeser then added an unassisted tally just 2:23 later for a 2-0 advantage. It was Moeser's 13th goal of the year.
The Blue Hens got on the board with 5:56 to play in the first as DeLargy scored on a high bullet to cut the deficit to 2-1. But the Pride responded with consecutive goals by Tierney, just 48 seconds later from
Dylan Alderman, and Yanes, seven seconds later from face-off specialist
Kyle Gallagher, for a 4-1 lead. Joe Eisele notched his 20th of the year for the Blue Hens with 4:22 to play in the first quarter off a pass from DeLargy before Yanes notched his second of the game less than a minute later for a 5-2 lead after one quarter.
Byrne scored the only goal of the second quarter, off a pass from Yanes, with just six seconds to play in the half to give Hofstra a 6-2 lead at the break.
But the Blue Hens came roaring back in the second half. After Moeser notched his second of the game for Hofstra just 4:59 into the third, UD scored back-to-back goals by Paul Major less than a minute later and DeLargy's second of the game at the 6:38 mark. But after Hofstra defensive midfielders
Luke Gomez scored off a pass from
Brenden Lynch less than a minute later to boost the Pride lead to 8-4, the Blue Hens rattled off three consecutive goals to close the deficit to one at 8-7. Romagnoli sandwiched two goals around a tally by Will Hirschman to bring Delaware back to8-7 with 12:27 to play in the fourth.
Hofstra responded with three consecutive goals as Byrne notched his third of the game, from Tierney, at the 8:20 mark,
Jimmy Yanes scored an unassisted tally with 2:25 to play and Byrne and Tierney hooked up for Byrne's fourth just 14 seconds later for an 11-7 advantage with 2:11 to play.
Romagnoli and DeLargy would score in the last 1:51 for the Blue Hens but it was not enough as the Pride rolled to their 10th win of the year and their second in the CAA.
Hofstra outshot Delaware, 32-31 and picked up 29 ground balls to the Blue Hens 27.
Hofstra will begin a two-game homestand next Saturday, April 15 when the Pride host the Dragons of Drexel University in a CAA contest at James M. Shuart Stadium. The game is also for the HEAdstrong Foundation's Hero Bowl between the two programs. Game time is 7 p.m.
