MLAX: #9 Hofstra Falls To #16 Towson; Will Face UMass In CAAs Thursday

Towson, MD – Pride junior Dylan Alderman tallied three goals and one assist but the Tiger seniors scored all 10 goals on Senior Day as #16 Towson defeated #9 Hofstra, 10-8 to capture the Colonial Athletic Association regular season title at Johnny Unitas Stadium Saturday afternoon.

With the victory, Towson (8-4, 4-1) will host the 2017 CAA Championship Tournament on Thursday and Saturday, May 4 and 6. The Tigers will face fourth-seed Drexel (6-7, 3-2) in one semifinal on Thursday at 5 p.m. while Hofstra (11-2, 3-2) will be the second-seed and will face third-seed UMass (6-7, 3-2) in the other semifinal at 7:30 p.m.

Alderman posted his third hat-trick of the season to lead the Pride. Freshman Ryan Tierney added a goal and an assist while senior Josh Byrne, juniors Brendan Kavanagh and Alex Moeser and sophomore Jimmy Yanes each scored solo goals. Junior goalie Jack Concannon made eight saves in the Pride cage.

Towson was led by senior Ryan Drenner with two goals and three assists while Tyler Young added four goals and Joe Seider chipped in with three more. Classmate Mike Lynch scored the remaining goal for the Tigers. Senior Matt Hoy made five saves to post the victory.

In a first period statistically dominated by the Tigers, Hofstra got on the ball first 9:47 into the quarter as Alderman tallied an unassisted goal for his16th of the year. But Towson tied the contest less than a minute later with Mike Lynch scoring his 13th of the year. The Tigers outshot the Pride, 11-6, picked up seven ground balls to Hofstra's four and won all three face-offs.

Hofstra came out in the second quarter with two goals in the first 2:28 to open up a 3-1 lead. Kavanagh opened the second period scoring with his 21st of the season. Just 1:29 later, Tierney notched his 27th goal of the year off a pass from Alderman to give the Pride a two-goal cushion.

But the Tigers answered with consecutive goals, 30 seconds apart, to tie the game at 3-3. Seider notched his 20th of the year at the 11:34 mark before Tyler Young tied the contest with his fifth of the season at the 11:04 mark. Hofstra took a 4-3 lead on Josh Byrne's 36th goal of the year.

Towson tied the game at 4-4 with just five seconds to play in the half on Drenner's first goal of the contest. The goal would begin a five goal run for the Tigers. In the third, Towson struck four times with Young and Seider doing the damage. Young scored the first two off passes from Drenner while Seider scored on the man-up with 2:15 to play in the third off a pass from Drenner and added his third of the game 56 seconds later to take an 8-4 lead after three quarters.

Hofstra ended a 26:34 drought at the 13:25 mark of the fourth as Alderman scored the first of back to back goals. Just 4:08 later Alderman completed the hat-trick-his third this year-4:08 later to close the gap to 8-6. But Young scored his fourth of the game just one minute later, from Lynch. Hofstra closed again to two on Alex Moeser's 16th goal of the year from Tierney with 2:52 to play. Towson ended the Pride's comeback thoughts as Drenner notched his second of the game with 1:21 left to boost the lead back to 10-7.

Hofstra's Jimmy Yanes closed out the scoring with just four seconds to play off a pass from Brett Osman to set the 10-8 final score. The Tigers outshot the Pride, 35-27 and picked up 30 ground balls to Hofstra's 23. Towson also won 14 of 22 face-offs.
