WTEN: Hofstra Falls To Drexel At CAA Championship

Elon, NC - Eighth-seeded Drexel advanced to the quarterfinals of the 2017 Colonial Athletic Association Women's Tennis Championship after defeating #9 Hofstra, 4-0, Thursday morning at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center on the campus of Elon University.

Hofstra saw its season end with a 10-16 record. The Dragons improved to 16-8 on the year, establishing a new school record for wins in a season, and will face top-seeded William & Mary at 8:30 a.m. Friday in the CAA Quarterfinals.

The Pride and the Dragons split the first two doubles matches before Drexel was able to clinch the point with a victory at No. 2. The Dragons' Lea Winkler and Honami Yazawa posted a 6-1 victory at No. 3 over Carmen Pestano and Giulia Leone, but Hofstra drew even with a 6-4 win from Sarah Catherine Herndon and Jasmine King at No. 1 over Ryshena Providence and Clary Rodriguez. In the deciding match, Drexel's Ghita Benhadi and Kendra Bunch edged Michal Kaplan and Disha Yellayi, 7-5.

Drexel won the first thre completed singles flights to clinch the overall victory as Yazawa got past King, 6-1, 6-0, at No. 1. Providence followed with a 6-4, 6-1 victory over Leone at No. 6 and Benhadi closed out the match by beating Kaplan, 6-3, 7-5, at No. 2.
