BB: Hofstra Hosts UNCW In CAA Weekend Series

Hempstead, NY - The Hofstra University Baseball team returns home tomorrow (April 21) to host the Seahawks of UNCW in a three-game Colonial Athletic Association series at University Field. Game times are 3 p.m. Friday, 1 p.m. Saturday and 12 p.m. Sunday.

Hofstra enters the weekend with a 9-25 mark overall and a 2-7 record in league play. The Pride is coming off an 8-2 victory at Manhattan Tuesday night that saw five Pride pitchers limit the Jaspers to six hits and two unearned runs. Chris Weiss picked up the win with two scoreless frames to start, and was followed by Michael James, Jorge Marrero, John Ryan and Matt Weissheier. Brad Witkowski carried the offensive load for the Pride, going 3-4 with a double and a two-run home run. Tom Archer had two base hits, while David Leiderman and Vinnie Costello each chipped in with a pair of RBIs.

Steven Foster leads the team in batting at .363 and has 13 doubles and 18 RBIs. Vito Friscia is hitting .308 with thee home runs and 16 RBIs.The injured Mikey Riesner is batting .302 with a team-high 22 RBIs, while Witkowski has upped his average to .275.Weiss leads the team with three wins, while Teddy Cillis has a staff-best 46 strikeouts. 

UNCW is 16-19 overall this year and is 5-4 in the CAA. The Seahawks dropped a home game against East Carolina Tuesday night, 9-5, to snap a three-game win streak. Casey Golden and Ryan Jeffers pace the UNCW offense with .307 batting averages. Golden has a team-high 10 home runs and has added 19 RBIs. Jeffers has 12 doubles, one triple and six home runs to go along with 21 RBIs. Nick Feight, the 2016 CAA Player of the Year, is batting .306 with nine homers and a team-best 28 RBIs. Alex Royalty leads the pitching staff with a 5-2 record and a 3.27 ERA. He also has a team-high 59 strikeouts.

The Seahawks hold a 34-9 advantage in the all-time series with Hofstra and have won six consecutive contests.

Friday: Teddy Cillis (0-6, 5.44 ERA) vs. Alex Royalty (5-2, 3.27 ERA)
Saturday: Jorge Marrero (1-5, 6.09 ERA) vs. Logan Beehler (1-5, 6.65 ERA)
Sunday: John Rooney (2-7, 6.56 ERA) vs. Zarion Sharpe (2-1, 5.33 ERA)
