Wilmington, N.C. – Hofstra Softball earned its first Colonial Athletic Association series sweep of the season with a 4-0 shutout of UNCW at Boseman Field on Sunday morning.
After six scoreless innings, the Pride (18-17, 7-4 CAA) took the lead in the seventh inning with the help of a
Lacey Clark three-run home run. Clark and freshman
Kristin Hallam, who scored Hofstra's first run, were both 2-for-4.
After pitching 16 innings on Saturday and allowing just one earned run, freshman pitcher
Sarah Cornell threw 6.1 more scoreless innings, before classmate
Alyssa Irons came in to close, teaming up with Cornell for the shutout and earning the save.
The Pride first threatened to score in the top of the first, with freshman Kirstin Hallam leading off with a single to shortstop before junior
Brittany Allocca smacked a double to left field. Classmate
Nikki Michalowski reached on a fielder's choice, with the Seahawks making the play on Hallam at the plate.
UNCW pitcher Peyton Jordan issued three straight walks with two outs in the top of the third to load the bases, but a pop-up to the second baseman got the Seahawks out unscathed once again.
UNCW (28-10-1, 8-4 CAA) hit a pair of singles in the bottom of the frame, but Hofstra catcher
Kaitlyne Musa threw down the runner at third for the second out as the Seahawks attempted the double steal. UNCW rebounded to put runners on the corners, but a ground-out to Hallam at shortstop ended the frame. The Seahawks had runners on second and third with two outs once again in the bottom of the fifth, but Hofstra was able to work out of the jam again.
The Pride loaded the bases with two outs in the top of the sixth, with Clark singling into left field before junior
Sarah Edwards reached after the third baseman's throw to first landed in the dirt. Classmate
Megan Patierno then walked, but Jordan threw a full-count strikeout to strand the runners.
After allowing a runner at first in the bottom of the sixth, Anna Hessenthaler popped up to Hallam, who threw to Allocca at first to catch the runner trying to get back for the double play to end the inning.
Hofstra scored the game's first run and opened up the game in the top of the seventh, with Hallam singling to the third baseman and racing to first. Junior
Brielle Pietrafesa followed it up with a bunt down the third baseline that allowed her to reach safely. Pietrafesa stole second and advanced to third on a wild pitch, which also allowed Hallam to come home for a 1-0 lead. Michalowski then walked and stole second. With runners on second and third, Clark sent a long ball over the left-field fence to give the Pride the 4-0 advantage, her sixth home run of the season.
UNCW put runners on first and second with no outs in the bottom of the seventh. Cornell struck out pinch-hitter Dominique Travers, but the Seahawks then loaded the bases on a bunt single. After Irons came in to relieve Cornell, UNCW hit an infield fly to Hallam for the second out. Another pop-up to Hallam ended the game.
Hofstra returns home for a midweek matchup with local rival Stony Brook at 4 p.m. on Wednesday at Bill Edwards Stadium.
