Hempstead, NY –
Brittany Allocca's bases-loaded walk broke a 2-2 tie and
Nikki Michalowski's three-run double capped off the Pride's four-run sixth inning as Hofstra won the "Battle of Long Island" with a 6-2 victory over Stony Brook Wednesday evening at Bill Edwards Stadium.
Hofstra won for the fifth consecutive game and improved to 19-17 on the season. The Seawolves dropped to 10-22 on the season, losing for the fourth time in five games.
Stony Brook took a 1-0 lead in the fourth on an RBI single from Allyssa Malony that scored Lindsey Hughes. But the Pride responded with a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning as
Megan Patierno homered and
Kristin Hallam delivered a sacrifice fly.
In the top of the sixth, Stony Brook's Irene Rivera led off with her fifth home run of the season to put the Seawolves back on top. But Hofstra starter
Sarah Cornell bore down and struck out the next three batters as part of her season-best nine strikeouts.
The Pride offense put together a two-out rally in the bottom of the inning to take the lead.
Courtney Scarpato reached on an infield single and Hallam followed with an infield hit of her own. After a walk to
Brielle Pietrafesa loaded the bases, Allocca drew a walk of her own to force in the go ahead run. Michalowski followed with a double to center field that cleared the bases for the 6-2 lead.
Cornell worked around an error in the seventh to improve to 15-7 on the year. The freshman scattered six hits and walked one.
Maddy Neales took the loss for Stony Brook, allowing four runs on four hits in 2 2/3 innings.
Hallam was the only Pride player with multiple hits as the Pride leadoff hitter collected two on the day.
