Hempstead NY - Delaware's Jeremy Ake was 4-5 with a double and two RBIs as the Fightin' Blue Hens took game one of a Colonial Athletic Association series from Hofstra, 8-4.
Delaware moved to 18-14 on the season and 5-5 in CAA play with the win. Hofstra slipped to 8-23 overall and 2-5 in league action.
Hofstra opened up a 3-0 lead following an RBI double from
Steven Foster in the second and a two-run home run from
David Leiderman in the third. Delaware answered in the bottom of the third, scoring a run on a two-out RBI double from Doug Trimble.
Delaware would take the lead in the fourth, scoring four times. Nick Patten drew a leadoff walk and then scored on Calvin Scott's triple. Diaz Nardo then delivered a single that tied the score at 3. Nardo went to second on a sacrifice bunt and a walk and an infield single loaded the bases. Jordan Glover then walked to force in the go ahead run and Ake followed with an infield single that drove in another run to make it 5-3 in favor of the Blue Hens.
The Pride got a run back in the fifth on
Mikey Riesner's RBI single that scored
Sean Rausch. The score remained 5-4 until the seventh when the Blue Hens added two more runs on a Brian Mayer double. Ake would drive in the final run with an eighth inning double.
Hofstra starter
Teddy Cillis (0-6) took the loss after allowing seven runs on 11 hits and seven walks in 6 2/3 innings. Foster,
Brad Witkowski, Leiderman and Riesner each had two hits for the Pride.
Nick Spadafino (3-0) started for Delaware and got the win after allowing four runs on 10 hits in five innings. Ron Marinaccio pitched two scoreless innings to notch his third save.
The teams continue the series Saturday at 1 p.m.
