Hempstead, N.Y. - Hofstra Softball took down LIU Brooklyn, 4-1, in a nonconference matchup on Little League Night at Bill Edwards Stadium.
Freshman
Sam Tomasetti went 2-for-3 on the night while junior
Brittany Allocca and senior
Lacey Clark each hit home runs.Â
Hofstra (15-17, 4-4 Colonial Athletic Association) got on the board first, with Clark sending a blast to dead center in the bottom of the second. Junior
Sarah Edwards then walked, before Tomasetti sent a hard-hit ball to left-center for a double. LIU Brooklyn pitcher Tallie Woodson then hit sophomore
Courtney Scarpato to load the bases.Â
Erynn Sobieski then came in to relieve Woodson, getting the second out on a fielder's choice with a throw to the place. Sobieski then walked junior
Brielle Pietrafesa to bring in a run. A wild pitch from Sobieski allowed Scarpato to come home for a 3-0 Hofstra lead.
Freshman pitcher
Sarah Cornell worked out of jams in the second and third innings. After allowing three singles with no outs in the top of the second, she retired the next three batters, including striking out Kayla Gloady looking. After issuing her fourth strikeout of the game in the top of the third, Cornell allowed runners on second and third. But once again she got out of the inning unscathed, this time with some help from shortstop
Kristin Hallam who ran down a pop-up.Â
Allocca hit her fourth home run in five games and sixth of the season in the bottom of the fifth, sending a solo shot over the left-field fence for a 4-0 Pride lead. She is now tied with classmate
Megan Patierno for the team lead in homers.
The Blackbirds (16-25, 2-4 NEC) pulled a run back in the top of the seventh on Victoria Zamora's sacrifice fly, but the Pride got out of the inning safely to seal the win, Cornell's 12th of the season. She allowed just one earned run, striking out four and not surrendering any walks.Â
The Pride heads to UNCW this weekend for a three-game conference series, its first CAA road trip of the season.Â
