WBB: Hofstra’s Season Ends With CAA Quarterfinal Loss To Elon

Harrisonburg, Va. – Hofstra Women's Basketball fell, 78-50, to top-seeded Elon in the Colonial Athletic Association Quarterfinal at JMU Convocation Center on Thursday afternoon. The loss ended the Pride's season, as the team finished with a 13-18 overall record.

Junior Aleana Leon put up a career-high 22 points, going 8-for-15 from the field as the only Hofstra player to finish in double figures.

Elon (25-6) advanced to the semifinals with double-digit performances from Essence Baucom, Shay Burnett, Jenifer Rhodes and Lauren Brown, as the Phoenix shot 52.6 percent from the field as a team.

The Phoenix picked up the first points of the game, but junior Olivia Askin picked up an offensive rebound, allowing classmate Ashunae Durant to tie the game at two with a mid-range jumper from the left side. A pair of free throws and a Shay Burnett fast-break layup gave Elon a 6-2 lead, but junior Aleana Leon answered with a jumper before senior Krystal Luciano knocked down a three-pointer for a 7-6 Hofstra lead. The Phoenix then went on a 7-0 run before senior Sydni Epps snapped it with a left-wing three with the assist to Luciano. Both teams went scoreless over the final 2:32 of the quarter, with Elon holding onto a 15-10 lead at the end of the frame.

Essence Baucom opened the second quarter with a three for Elon, before a layup from Jenifer Rhodes gave the Phoenix a double-digit advantage. Askin snapped a 6-0 Elon run with a three, before Leon's jumper shaved the deficit back to single digits at 24-15. After the Phoenix had pushed its advantage to 13, Leon knocked down a left-wing trey, but Elon kept pushing, taking a 39-20 lead into halftime.

Burnett made a layup on an offensive rebound from a missed free throw. Leon moved into double figures with a fast-break bucket after coming up with a steal at mid-court. She then made a three from the top of the key to cut Elon's lead to 44-26. Leon and Epps then combined to go 4-for-4 from the line, but a three-pointer from the Phoenix made it a 49-30 game. Elon outscored the Pride, 10-6, for the remainder of the quarter, taking a 59-36 lead into the final frame.

Epps and Leon both made layups to open the fourth quarter, but the Pride couldn't make up any ground in the final frame, as Elon took the win with the final 78-50 win.

-Seniors Krystal Luciano, Sydni Epps and Sandra Dongmo all played the final games of their Hofstra careers.
