MLAX: Kavanagh, Tierney and Concannon Lead Hofstra Over Georgetown

Washington, D.C. – Pride junior Brendan Kavanagh and freshman Ryan Tierney each scored career-highs of four goals and junior goalie Jack Concannon stopped a career-high 17 shots as undefeated Hofstra defeated Georgetown, 11-9 at Cooper Field Saturday afternoon.

The Pride improved to 4-0 on the year while the Hoyas of Georgetown slipped to 0-4. Hofstra is 4-0 to open the season for the first time since 2011 when the Pride won the first five games and 13 of the first 14 contests that season.

Kavanagh, who topped his previous best of three goals set against Monmouth in the 2017 season opener, scored once in the first and second quarters and then added consecutive goals early in the fourth quarter to break a 9-9 tie. His four points are also a career-high. Tierney continues his hot hand with his four goals, topping his previous best of three against both Monmouth and NJIT, and adding five points on the day to equal his five points against NJIT. Junior Dylan Alderman posted a goal and two assists for the second consecutive contest.

Concannon, a third team preseason All-American by Inside Lacrosse this season, topped his previous best of 16 against Fairfield last April. Saturday, he made 17 saves including 14 in the first half alone.

The Hoyas were led by sophomore Daniel Bucaro with three goals and one assist and senior Peter Conley with two goals and one assist. Junior goalie Nick Marrocco stopped nine shots in the Georgetown cage.

In a game that featured six tied scores but just three lead changes, the Hoyas opened the scoring on Conley's ninth of the season on a bounce shot 5:12 into the contest. Hofstra responded with three unanswered goals by freshman Jimmy Yanes, his fourth of the year, Kavanagh, his sixth, and Tierney, his eighth, to take a 3-1 advantage with 5:12 to play in the first. But the Hoyas answered back with three unanswered goals of their own as Conley netted his second and Bucaro scored twice in a span of 2:03 to put Georgetown ahead, 4-3 after one quarter.

In the second quarter, the two teams exchanged the first four goals to keep the Hoyas ahead, 6-5 after Ryan Hursey's goal with 3:54 to play in the half. But Hofstra replied with goals by senior defender Michael Diener-the first of his career-and two by Tierney in the final 2:32 to take an 8-6 lead into the locker room at halftime. The Hoyas outshot Hofstra, 28-20 in the first 30 minutes but Concannon was a major factor with Hofstra being ahead with five saves in the first quarter and nine in the second.

Bucaro for Georgetown and Alderman for Hofstra exchanged goals in the first four minutes of the third quarter to move the score to 9-7 in favor of the Pride. But Hoya freshman Jake Carraway scored at the 9:54 mark and junior Craig Berge tied the game at 9-all with 5:54 to play in the third.

Hofstra broke the tie just 2:01 into the fourth quarter as Kavanagh scored off a pass from Alderman. Kavanagh added an insurance goal just 2:13 later to boost the Pride lead to 11-9. The Hoyas took eight shots in the period but could only put one on the Pride cage which Concannon stopped.

Georgetown outshot the Pride, 43-34 while Hofstra picked up 30 ground balls to the Hoyas 25. Georgetown also won 17 of 24 face-offs behind Peter Tagliaferri, who captured 13 of 18.

Hofstra returns to action next Saturday, March 11 when the Pride travel to Chapel Hill, NC to face the defending national champion, Tar Heels of North Carolina at 2:30 p.m.
