MTEN: Hofstra Falls At JMU In CAA Opener

Harrisonburg, VA – The Hofstra University Men's Tennis team concluded a four-day road trip with a 5-2 Colonial Athletic Association loss at James Madison. Hofstra fell to 5-9 overall and 0-1 in the CAA with the loss, while the Dukes moved to 6-6 overall and 1-1 in league play.

The Dukes won two of three doubles flights to take a 1-0 lead in the match. Hofstra's Marcus Smith and Jan Leithner picked up a 6-1 win over Damon Roberts and Tate Steinour at third doubles before JMU's Theophile Lanthiez and Paul Mendoza picked up a 6-3 win over Niko Vulinovich and Coco Haener at the No. 1 flight. Then in a hard-fought match that went to a a tiebreaker, JMU's Brett Moorhead and Sebastian Salinas defeated David Schrott and Nick Silvestri, 7-6 (9-7) at No. 2 to clinch the point for the Dukes.

The teams exchanged singles wins over the first four completed singles with Roberts defeating Leithner at No. 2 (6-2, 7-5) and Vulinovich downing Lanthiez at No. 3 (6-4, 7-6 [7-4]). Moorhead the posted a 6-2, 6-2 win over Schrott at the fourth flight before Smith made it a 3-2 match with a three-set win over Salinas at the first flight (7-6 [7-5], 2-6, 7-6 [7-3]).

Mendoza then clinched the win for James Madison with a 7-5, 6-1 over Haener at the fifth flight. Steinour closed the match with a 6-1, 6-4 win over Silvestri at No. 6.

Hofstra will be back in action Sunday at Connecticut.
