SB: Hofstra Drops Pair Of Games On Day 2 Of Oregon Duck Invitational

Eugene, Ore. – Hofstra Softball was edged, 2-0, by Idaho State, and 3-2, by Pacific on Saturday at the Oregon Duck Invitational at Jane Sanders Stadium. Hofstra dropped to 8-9 on the season.

Junior Sarah Edwards was 2-for-2 pinch-hitting on the day, while classmate Brittany Allocca picked up a pair of RBIs, a double and a home run.

Freshman pitcher Sarah Cornell (7-3) started both games, finishing with eight strikeouts and just one walk while allowing 12 hits and three earned runs in 12.0 innings pitched.

GAME 1 – IDAHO STATE

The Bengals (6-11) scored of their both runs in the top of the fourth inning in Game 1, with Alex Portesi's single bringing in the first before Aubrey Creekmore's sacrifice fly drove in another.

The Pride had its opportunities to score throughout the game, beginning with a chance in the second inning when senior Lacey Clark reached on an error before junior Brittany Allocca smacked a double. Allocca advanced to third, but Clark was thrown out at home.

Freshman Sam Tomasetti led off the bottom of the third with a double down the left field line and moved to third on a Courtney Scarpato sacrifice bunt. Freshman Kristin Hallam walked and then stole second, and junior Brielle Pietrafesa was also walked to load the bases with one out, but a pop-up and a ground-out ended the threat.

Scarpato singled with one out in the bottom of the fifth and advanced to third on a pair of wild pitches and Hallam was walked once again, but the Bengals turned a double play to get out of the inning.

In the bottom of the sixth, still trailing by two, Clark singled to left field before Allocca and junior Nikki Michalowski both reached on fielder's choice plays. Junior Sarah Edwards stepped in to pinch-hit and singled to right field, loading the bases with two outs. Freshman Sarah Cornell, also pinch-hitting, reached on a fielder's choice, but the out at third got Idaho State out of the jam.

Hallam and Pietrafesa each singled up the left side in the bottom of the seventh, but the attempt at a rally fell short.

GAME 2 – PACIFIC

Allocca got the Pride on the board in the first inning of Game 2, using a sacrifice fly to bring Hallam home after she had walked and Pietrafesa had singled to right field.

The Tigers (12-11) knotted the score at one in the bottom of the second with a solo home run from Caitlyn Sung. A two-run blast from Rachel Sellers in the bottom of the fifth gave Pacific a 3-1 lead.

It was then Allocca again, hitting a solo shot to left field to pull a run back for Hofstra in the top of the sixth. The home run was her second of the season, tying her for the team lead with Clark and junior Megan Patierno. Allocca also took over the lead in RBIs, moving to 11 on the season.

Once again with the game on the line in the seventh, Edwards and Cornell came in to pinch-hit, with Edwards singling to left field and Cornell using a sacrifice bunt to advance Edwards to second. A ground-out and a strikeout sealed the win for Pacific.

Senior Jessica Peslak pitched the sixth inning for Hofstra, retiring the side in order.

The Pride plays its final game of the tournament tomorrow, facing the fourth-ranked host Ducks once again, at 1 p.m. (10 a.m. PST) at Jane Sanders Stadium.
