SB: Hofstra Falls To #4 Oregon In Tournament Finale

Eugene, Ore. – Hofstra Softball dropped the final game of the Oregon Duck Invitational to the fourth-ranked hosts, 12-1, in five innings on Sunday at Jane Sanders Stadium. The Pride fell to 8-10 on the season as the Ducks stayed perfect at 24-0.

After allowing runners to reach second and third, freshman pitcher Sarah Cornell threw back-to-back strikeouts for the first two outs of the bottom of the first. A walk then loaded the bases for the Ducks, and a wild pitch allowed Oregon to score. Another walk filled up the bases once again, but a fly-out to freshman Sam Tomasetti in center field got Hofstra out of the jam down just 1-0.

Sammie Puentes singled with one out in the bottom of the second but was caught stealing, with Hofstra catcher Brittany Allocca firing a throw to senior Lacey Clark at second. After allowing another single, another fly-out to center ended the inning scoreless.

The Ducks loaded the bases once again in the bottom of the third, and a pitch that struck Mia Camuso brought in Oregon's second run. With the bases still loaded, Cornell threw a strikeout for the first out. Sophomore Courtney Scarpato ran in to snag a foul ball to left field for the second out. Puentes' single then brought in another pair of runs and a walk with the bases full drove in another for a 5-0 Oregon lead. A pop-up ended the inning with three runners still on.

A three-run home run from Shannon Rhodes gave the Ducks an 8-0 advantage in the bottom of the fourth. After freshman Alyssa Irons came in to relieve Cornell, Oregon used a triple and a single to bring in the ninth run. The Ducks pushed their lead to 12-0 before senior Jessica Peslak came in to pitch.

Junior Sarah Edwards was walked to lead off the top of the fifth. She took advantage of some confusion on the home-plate umpire's call and stole second before advancing to third on a passed ball. Tomasetti then walked to put runners on the corners. Scarpato then spoiled Maggie Balint's no-hitter and shutout, singling to left field to bring Edwards home for the final 12-1 score line.

The Pride will stay closer to home next weekend, heading to the St. John's Invitational for matchups with local rivals Fairleigh Dickinson, Stony Brook, Manhattan and the host Red Storm.
