OCEANSIDE, New York – Quinnipiac's Axel Stern posted a win at No. 5 singles to clinch a 4-3 victory for the Bobcats over Hofstra Saturday evening at the Point Set Racquet Club.
With the win, Quinnipiac improves to 6-4 on the season, while Hofstra falls to 3-8.
Hofstra opened with a win at No. 2 doubles as
Marcus Smith and
Jan Leithner defeated Austin Yannone and Stern, 6-2. The Bobcats bounced back with wins at No. 1 and No. 3 to take the doubles point.
Hofstra tied the score at 1 with a No. 2 singles win by
Niko Vulinovich over Freddie Zaretsky, who was forced to retire due to injury in the first set. Quinnipiac won at No. 3, but Hofstra was able to tie the match at two after Smith won over Kei Ezaka at the No. 1 singles match, 6-2, 3-6, 6-3.
Hofstra took a 3-2 lead after the No. 6 singles match as
Nick Silvestri was able to best Yannone in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4. Quinnipiac the won in a three-set match at No. 4 to tie the match at 3-3 and set up the decisive final match at No. 5. Stern bested
David Schrott in the first set 7-6 (2) and then took the second set, 7-5, to clinch the win for Quinnipiac.
Hofstra is scheduled to host Stony Brook Wednesday, March 15.
