Philadelphia, PA – The Hofstra Wrestling team posted a 1-1 mark on the day in two Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association (EIWA) matches in Pennsylvania Saturday. The Pride defeated the Diplomats of Franklin and Marshall, 22-21 in an afternoon match in Lancaster before falling to Drexel in Philadelphia, 36-2 Saturday night.
In the first match of the day at Franklin and Marshall in Lancaster, PA, Pride freshman
Jacob Martin (11-18) opened the contest with an exciting 3-1 victory in sudden victory over Edgar Garcia at 125 pounds. But the Diplomats won the next two weight classes in bonus-point fashion with a pin at 133 and a forfeit at 141 to take a 12-3 lead in the match.
Hofstra sophomore
Ryan Burkert (17-10) edged Sam Butler, 2-0 at 149 to close the gap to 12-6. But F&M won the next two matches, both by decision to boost their lead to 18-6. Freshman
Sage Heller recorded a key 14-5 major decision win over James Stillerman at 174 as the Pride closed to 18-10. Anthony Mancini gave Franklin and Marshall a 21-10 advantage with a 6-2 decision over
Michael Oxley at 184. But the roof caved in on the Diplomats as they had to forfeit 197 pounds to Hofstra's
Nezar Haddad (12-10) and
Omar Haddad (8-15) at 285 to give the Pride a 22-21 victory.
In the nightcap at Drexel in Philadelphia, the Dragons won the first six weight classes of the match to build a 25-0 lead after Alex DiCiantis defeated
Michael Oxley at 184 pounds. But Hofstra red-shirt sophomore
Nezar Haddad, who transferred from Drexel last summer, put the Pride on the board with a 2-1 overtime victory over Josh Murphy at 197 pounds.
Drexel's 19
th-ranked Joey Goodhart defeated
Omar Haddad, 4-1 at 285 after which a team penalty point was assessed to each team after the contest to place the score at 27-2. The Dragons finishes up with a pin at 125 and win by decision at 133 for the 36-2 victory.
Hofstra returns to action this Thursday, February 9 when the Pride host the Broncs of Rider University at the David S. Mack Physical Education Center. Match time is 7 p.m.
