WBB: Hofstra Rally Falls Short In Loss To James Madison

Hempstead, NY - Hofstra rallied in the fourth quarter, opening the stanza with a 9-0 run to get within one, but James Madison held the Pride off in a 61-50 victory Friday night at the David S. Mack Sports and Exhibition Complex.

Hofstra lost its sixth game in a row to fall to 8-12 overall and 1-8 in the Colonial Athletic Association. James Madison won for the third consecutive game and improved to 15-6 overall and 8-2 in the CAA.

Ashunae Durant and Aleana Leon led the Pride with 15 points each, while Krystal Luciano chipped in with 14 points and five assists. Durant pulled down a team-high seven rebounds.

The teams played a tight first quarter with the Pride holding a 9-8 lead with 2:25 to go. But the Dukes closed the quarter on an 8-0 run to take a 16-9 lead at the end of the opening stanza. Luciano (5) and Leon combined to score all of the Pride's first quarter points. The Dukes had five players score, led by Logan Reynolds' six points off the bench.

James Madison extended the lead to 27-14 midway through the second quarter. The Dukes suffered through a long scoring drought of more than four minutes, but the Pride was unable to take advantage and trailed 31-17 at the half. Reynolds led the Dukes with 11 points, while the Pride received six points from Durant and five each from Leon and Luciano.

Hofstra opened up the third quarter with five quick points to cut its deficit to nine, 31-22, 40 seconds into the period. But Precious Hall ended the mini run with a three-pointer to push the JMU lead back to double-digits at 34-22 with 7:48 to go. The Pride cut the lead to nine once again, 39-30, on a layup from Sandra Dongmo with 4:40 to go. After a JMU basket, Leon scored five straight points for the Pride to make the score 41-35 with 1:51 to go in the third. But Hall drained three's on back-to-back possessions for the Dukes and pushed the advantage back to 12, 47-35, with 1:06 to play.

Hofstra cut its deficit to four, 47-43, following a 6-0 run to open the fourth quarter. Durant had a three point play followed by a free throw and a basket from Leon. Luciano then brought the Pride within one, 47-46, with a corner three with 4:44 to go. But Hall answered with a three on the other end to give the Dukes some breathing room.   The Dukes would then pull away, outscoring the Pride, 14-4, down the stretch.

Hall led James Madison with 20 points. The Dukes senior guard eclipsed the 2,000-point plateau and now has 2,004 in her career. She is the third JMU player to score at least 2,000 career points. Reynolds was the only other Duke in double figures with 11 points. Kamiah Smalls had a game-high 13 rebounds for the Dukes, who outrebounded the Pride, 51-32.
