WBB: Durant's 18 Not Enough As Towson Holds Off Hofstra

Hempstead, NY - Ashunae Durant had 18 points and seven rebounds to lead Hofstra, but Towson outscored Hofstra, 18-15, in the decisive fourth quarter in a 59-56 victory Friday night at the David S. Mack Sports and Exhibition Complex. The teams entered the final stanza deadlocked at 41.

The Tigers improved to 12-15 overall and 5-11 in the Colonial Athletic Association with the win. Hofstra slipped to 11-16 and 4-12 in league play.

Durant was joined in double figures by Krystal Luciano, who had 10 points to go along with six rebounds and seven assists. Olivia Askin and Aleana Leon each had nine points, while Sandra Dongmo chipped in with eight points.

Sianni Martin of Towson led all scorers with 21, while teammate Mary Cuevas had a game-high 13 rebounds. Raven Bankston was the only other Tiger in double figures with 16 points.

The Pride scored the first five points of the game and then went on a scoreless drought of more than four minutes as the Tigers scored eight unanswered points to take an 8-5 lead. Dongmo ended the drought with a layup and the Pride would tie the score at 11 on a Durant foul line jumper with 1:46 to go. The teams traded baskets in the final minute for a 13-13 tie at the end of the first 10 minutes.

The offense lulled for both teams at the start of the second quarter, as the teams combined for six points in the first 4:35 (all by Towson) as the Tigers took a 19-13 lead with 5:25 to play in the half. The Pride finally got a basket with 4:15 on the clock, which cut the Pride's deficit to seven, 22-15. After going down by as many as 11, the Pride got back to within six, 28-22, with 33.7 second left following a Leon three-pointer and that would be the score at intermission.

Askin made it a five-point game, 30-25, 1:10 into the third quarter with a three-pointer but Bankston answered for Towson with a three of her own to extend the lead to 33-25. The lead would grow to 10, 35-25, with 7:46 to go. Hofstra would cut the Tigers lead to six on back-to-back layups from Durant, but Towson answered with four straight points to take back the double-digit advantage, 39-29, with 5:23 to go. The Pride scored six consecutive points, four by Durant, to make it a 39-35 game with 3:21 to go. Leon's fast break layup off a lead pass from Luciano got Hofstra to within two, 41-39, and Luciano's two free throws tied the score with 17.9 second to go.

The Tigers opened the scoring in the fourth with five straight points including a three-pointer from Martin that gave Towson a 46-41 lead with 8:25 to play. Askin got the Pride on the board in the quarter with her third three-pointer of the game with 7:24 to go that made it a two-point game, 46-44. But Martin connected on another three to push the lead back to five with 6:20 to go. Hofstra would cut its deficit to three on multiple occasions but did not get closer until Durant hit a baseline jumper with 1:48 to play that made the score 53-52 in favor of the Tigers.

With Towson leading, 55-54 in the final minute, Martin drained a jumper just ahead of the shot clock expiring to put the Tigers back up by three with 47 seconds to go. Dongmo followed her own miss for the Pride and made it a 57-56 game with 11 ticks on the clock. Martin went to the line with seven seconds left and hit both for a 59-56 lead. Hofstra had one last shot, but a three-point attempt was not good and Towson grabbed the rebound as time expired.
