Justin Wright-Foreman poured in a game and career-high 35 points, junior
Rokas Gustys pulled down a game-high 15 rebounds and the Hofstra Men's Basketball team closed the game on a 15-0 run to earn a 96-82 victory over William & Mary on Thursday evening at Kaplan Arena.
Hofstra improves to 14-16 overall and 6-11 in Colonial Athletic Association play with the win, while William & Mary falls to 15-13 and 9-8 in the league. The win avenges a 95-93 William & Mary overtime win in Hempstead on January 2.
Senior
Deron Powers was great in is homecoming to Williamsburg as he tallied 19 points, five assists and five rebounds. Freshman
Eli Pemberton chipped in with 16 points.
Hofstra also handed the Tribe its first home loss of the season after William & Mary began the season with 12 straight home wins.
Wright-Foreman's 35 points were the most for a Pride player since Zeke Upshaw scored 37 at Richmond on November 19, 2013. It was also his fourth game this season of at least 30 points, tops in the CAA.
It was a high-scoring first half as the two squads combined for 82 points with the game knotted at 41 at the break. William & Mary jumped out to an early 14-5 lead following an Omar Prewitt three-pointer with 15:47 left before intermission.
The Pride gradually chipped away at the deficit and a Gustys layup with 9:22 remaining in the half made it 24-23. That basket closed an 18-10 run for Hofstra to get the deficit to one.
The Tribe would still lead by six, 35-29, with just over five minutes left in the half before Hofstra put together a 9-2 run to take its first lead of the contest at 38-37 with 2:14 left courtesy of a Wright-Foreman three-pointer.
Four straight free throws, two each from senior
Brian Bernardi and Pemberton, would give Hofstra its largest lead of the game at 57-52 with 14:56 left in regulation.
Another Wright-Foreman three-pointer, this one with 11:48 left, pushed the Hofstra lead back to 65-60 before William & Mary went on a 13-3 run to lead 73-68 with 8:36 remaining after a dunk from Jack Whitman.
It would be tight over the few minutes with two free throws from Whitman making it an 82-81 Tribe lead with 3:57 left.
At that point, Hofstra took over as Wright-Foreman scored five of the Pride's next six points to give Hofstra a commanding 87-82 lead with 1:36 left.
Hofstra would hold William & Mary scoreless over nearly the final four minutes and 7-8 shooting from the free throw line clinched the win for the Pride.
Daniel Dixon scored 32 points for William & Mary, while Omar Prewitt added 12 points, five rebounds and three assists and Whitman chipped in with 11 points.
Hofstra will conclude the regular season on Saturday when it travels to James Madison for a 12 p.m. contest. That game will be televised the American Sports Network.
NOTES
- Hofstra is now 18-12 all-time against William & Mary.
- With his 15 rebounds, Gustys now has 910 career rebounds. He is just the fourth player in program history to ever reach 900 career rebounds and the first since David Taylor in 1982. In addition, he is only the 14th player in CAA history to reach 900 career rebounds.
- It was Wright-Foreman's 20th straight game in double figures and 10th game of at least 20 points.
