WBB: Hofstra Pushes For Another Fourth-Quarter Rally, Falls Short At Delaware

Newark, Del. – Hofstra Women's Basketball pulled within seven in the fourth quarter, but ultimately fell to Delaware, 56-45, at the Bob Carpenter Center on Sunday evening in a game that was broadcast by American Sports Network.

Junior Ashunae Durant led the Pride (10-14, 3-10 Colonial Athletic Association) with her 15th double-double of the season, notching 20 points and 12 rebounds, going 7-for-12 from the field and 6-for-8 from the free-throw line.

Delaware (14-10, 8-5 CAA) had three players finish in double-figures, led by Nicole Enabosi's double-double with 21 points and 11 rebounds. Makeda Nicholas chipped in 13 points and six assists, while Erika Brown went 8-for-8 from the free-throw line to finish with 10 points and eight boards.

The Blue Hens took an early 11-2 lead, prompting the Pride to call a timeout with 5:55 left in the first quarter. Delaware scored the first points out of the timeout before senior Krystal Luciano made a long pass to Durant for a transition layup to snap the Blue Hens' run. But Delaware quickly pushed its lead to 18-4. Senior Sandra Dongmo knocked down a pair of free throws, but the Blue Hens took a 20-6 advantage out of the frame.

Durant made both of her foul shots early in the second, then helped the Pride cause two consecutive turnovers on defense and converted on a long-range jumper to cut the deficit to 12. Hannah Jardine hit a left-wing three to put the Blue Hens up, 31-15. Junior Aleana Leon went 4-for-4 from the free-throw line and Luciano added two of her own late in the quarter, giving the Blue Hens a 35-21 lead at the half.

Junior Olivia Askin drained a three-pointer to open the third quarter, but Delaware continued to match Hofstra and keep its lead at 14. By outscoring the Blue Hens, 11-9, in the frame, the Pride faced a 44-32 deficit heading into the final quarter.

Jardine hit a three early in the fourth to push the Blue Hens' lead to 49-34, but Durant went 3-for-4 from the stripe to cut it back to 12 at 49-37 just under halfway through the quarter. Askin then hit her second trey of the day to make it a nine-point game, 49-40, with 4:30 to go. Out of the media timeout, the Pride stole Delaware's in-bounds attempt, and Askin cashed in on a layup to bring it to 49-42. A pair of made free throws from Erika Brown snapped Hofstra's 8-0 run and a scoreless drought for the Blue Hens of almost seven minutes. Enabosi made one of her two shots with 1:01 left to push the lead back to double-digits, 52-42. Despite Hofstra holding Delaware without a field goal for the final 8:05 of the game, the Blue Hens used free throws to seal the win at 56-45.

Hofstra continues a three-game road swing with a 7 p.m. game Thursday at Elon before travelling to UNCW next Sunday.
