Bethpage, NY – Hofstra won the doubles point and then swept all six singles flights to pick up its first win of the spring, 7-0, over Siena Saturday night at Sportime in Bethpage.
Coco Haener and
Niko Vulinovich picked up a 6-3 win at first doubles over Cameron Kirkwood and Alessandro Saglia to open the match. Siena's Geovanny Mendoza and Diego Lebron evened doubles with a 6-4 win over
David Schrott and
Nick Silvestri at the third flight, setting up a decisive second flight match between
Jan Leithner and
Marcus Smith of the Pride and Matt Bellino and Nick Boening of the Saints. The Hofstra pair prevailed with a 7-6 (3) win to earn the point for the Pride.
Hofstra won the first three singles flights to clinch the match. Leithner downed Mendoza (6-1, 6-0) at third singles; Vulinovich picked up a 6-4, 6-0 win over Saglia at the second flight; and Smith posted a 6-0, 6-4 victory over Kirkwood at the first flight.
The remaining three flights were conducted in pro set format with the match already decided. Silvestri posted an 8-0 win over Jace Koretz at fifth singles. Schrott picked up his first win in a Hofstra uniform as he downed Boening, 8-5, at sixth singles and Haener prevailed over Bellino, 9-8 (3), at the fourth flight.
"Our team played with a lot of energy today," said Hofstra Coach
Jason Pasion. "I am proud of
David Schrott for earning his first Hofstra win. The victory was extra special for him as he dedicated the match to his former private coach, Manfred Dittmann, who passed away earlier in the week."
The Pride, who hosts Loyola Sunday, improved to 2-4 on the season. Siena fell to 2-6.
