Ryan Burkert recorded a major decision victory at 149 pounds but that was the only win of the day for the Pride as Hofstra dropped a 40-4 decision to the Broncs of Rider University at the David S. Mack Physical Education Center Friday afternoon. The match was the rescheduled contest of the postponed affair from Thursday night.
Rider won its fourth consecutive match to improve to 10-1 on the season. Hofstra, which dropped its second consecutive contest, falls to 6-9 on the year.
The Broncs jumped out to a 12-0 lead in the match with two decision victories and a forfeit by the Pride at 141. Brendan Calas edged Pride freshman
Jacob Martin, 5-3 in sudden victory at 125 to put Rider on the board. Anthony Cefolo boosted the lead with a 7-1 decision over Hofstra freshman
Vinny Vespa at 133 before the Pride's forfeit at 141 put them in a 12-0 hole.
Burkert stopped the Rider run with a commanding 11-2 major decision over Jesse Rodgers at 149. It was Burkert's fourth major decision win of the season which ties him for the team lead with Vespa. Burkert is now 18-11 on the year.
Rider responded with three consecutive pins to put the match away. At 157 B.J. Clagon pinned Pride red-shirt freshman
Jake Kaminsky at the 1:34 mark. Then Chad Walsh pinned red-shirt sophomore
Bobby Fehr at 165 at the 5:52 mark. Then Dean Sherry pinned freshman
Sage Heller at the 3:52 mark of the 174-pound match to give Rider a 30-4 lead.
The Broncs wrapped up the match with a 6-2 win at 184, a 15-4 major decision at 197 and a 3-1 sudden victory win at 285.
Hofstra returns to action on Friday, February 17 when the Pride host the Crimson of Harvard University at the Mack Physical Education Center. Match time for the Alumni Night contest is 7 p.m.
