VB: Hofstra Rallies From Two Sets Down To Defeat Northeastern In The CAA Quarters

Harrisonburg, VA – Sophomore Laura Masciullo recorded 18 kills, classmate Luisa Sydlik added 50 assists and 16 digs and freshman Ivania Ortiz posted 12 kills and 13 digs as Hofstra rallied from two sets down to post a 3-2 match victory over Northeastern in the Colonial Athletic Association Volleyball Championship Quarterfinals at James Madison University's Sinclair Gymnasium Thursday night.

Set scores were 18-25, 21-25, 25-23, 25-22 and 21-19 for the Pride. Hofstra, the fifth seed, improves to 18-13 on the season and advances to the CAA Championship semifinals against top-seed Charleston at 7 p.m. Friday night. Northeastern, which was the fourth-seed, ends its season with a 17-13 overall record.

In addition to Masciullo, who posted her ninth double-double of the season with the 18 kills and 10 digs, Sydlik, who notched her 11th double-double, and Ortiz, who tallied her seventh double-double, junior Michela Rucli added 11 kills and a team-high .368 attack percentage.

After going down two sets to none, the Pride recorded their first set victory in the third set by hitting just .143, with 11 kills and five errors in 42 total attacks. With the set tied at 23-all, Masciullo and Ortiz followed with kills for the victory. The fourth set was the Pride's best attack set, hitting .360 with 14 kills and just five errors in 25 total attacks. Leading 19-18, Hofstra tallied six of the next 10 points to even the match at two sets each.

In the deciding fifth set, there were seven tied scores, the last at 19-19 after a kill by Northeastern sophomore Amy Underdown. But a service error by Huskies junior Gabrielle Eyl and a kill by Hofstra's Masciullo gave the Pride the victory.

Northeastern was led by Underdown with 25 kills and 17 digs while freshman Samantha Shupe had 29 assists and 15 digs and senior Brigitte Burcescu added 12 kills.
