MBB: Hofstra Rallies To Down Army West Point In Season Opener

Hempstead, NY - Junior Justin Wright-Foreman scored 16 of his game-high 25 points in the second half as Hofstra pulled away late in a 77-74 victory over Army West Point at the David S. Mack Sports and Exhibition Complex Friday night in the 2017-18 season opener for both teams.

Hofstra (1-0) trailed 68-67 before a three-point play from Wright-Foreman gave the Pride the lead for good, 70-68 with 3:30 to go. After a steal by senior Rokas Gustys, junior Desure Buie came down and drained a three-pointer for a 73-68 lead with 3:12 to play. The Black Knights (0-1) got to within one, 75-74, with 10 seconds to play after two free throws from Jordan Fox. But Buie hit a pair of free throws with 7.5 seconds to go to push the lead back to three and a tying field goal attempt by Army West Point was no good.

Hofstra held a 37-36 lead at halftime in an opening 20 minutes that saw seven tie scores and four lead changes. Wright-Foreman gave the Pride the lead with a pair of free throws with 47 seconds left in the opening stanza and finished with nine points.

Wright-foreman added six rebounds and five assists. Graduate student Joel Angus had 13 points and eight rebounds in his Hofstra debut, while Buie finished with a career-high 12 points in his return game after missing most of last season due to injury. Freshman Jalen Ray also scored in double-figures with 10 points.

Matt Wilson scored 17 points and grabbed six rebounds to lead Army West Point. The Black Knights also got 13 points from Fox and 12 points from Jacob Kessler.

Hofstra will be back in action Monday night when it hosts Kennesaw State at the Mack Sports Complex. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m.
