WSOC: Hofstra Clinches CAA Tournament Berth With Win Over James Madison

Hempstead, N.Y. – The Hofstra Women's Soccer team used an NCAA-record 26 corner kicks to take a 3-0 win over Colonial Athletic Association foe James Madison and clinch a CAA Tournament berth on Sunday afternoon at Hofstra Soccer Stadium.

The Pride (10-3-2, 6-0 CAA) scored three goals for the third straight game, pushing its win streak to seven and its unbeaten run to nine. The Dukes dropped to 7-8 and 2-4 in CAA play.

Hofstra got two of its goals off corner kicks, with junior Madeline Anderson heading in a corner from classmate Monique Iannella in the 25th minute to give the Pride a 1-0 lead. The Pride dominated the first half, with a whopping 20 corner kicks and 18 shots. After sustained pressure from the Dukes in the early goings of the second half, sophomore Rachel Cardinal knocked in another Iannella corner in the 75th minute to double the Pride's lead with her first career goal.

Freshman Lucy Shepherd sealed the deal for Hofstra, winning the ball in the box and firing home in the 85th minute for her second tally of the season.

The Pride heads to the CAA's other unbeaten team and defending CAA champion Northeastern (9-4-2, 3-0-2 CAA) on Thursday for a 6 p.m. matchup.

Notes:
-The previous NCAA record for corner kicks was 23, set by Wisconsin in a 1-0 double-overtime win over Green Bay on Aug. 28, 2009.
-Iannella's pair of assists were her first Hofstra points.
-Anderson led all players with seven shots.
-Hofstra now has eight shutouts on the season and has allowed just two goals over its nine-game unbeaten streak.
-With the win, Head Coach Simon Riddiough secured his 11th straight season with double-digit wins.
