VB: Hofstra Escapes With Five-Set Win Over William & Mary

Hempstead, NY – Sophomore setter Luisa Sydlik posted 52 assists and 14 digs to lead the Hofstra Volleyball team to five-set win over William & Mary on Saturday evening at the David S. Mack Sports and Exhibition Complex. The win was the Pride's fifth straight.

Hofstra, which won by set scores of 25-16, 25-20, 20-25, 18-25 and 15-8, improved to 13-7 and 5-1 in the league. William & Mary falls to 2-17 and 0-6 in Colonial Athletic Association play with the defeat. Sophomore Laura Masciullo led all players in the match with 19 kills.

The Pride looked to be in control in the contest, taking the first two sets and hitting over .300 in both, before the Tribe stormed back. William & Mary would even the match at two sets each with strong defense in the third and fourth stanza. The final set saw Hofstra quickly erase any doubt as they jumped out to an 8-1 lead as Masciullo posted three kills and a block in the set-opening run to help push the Pride to the win. Freshman Ivania Ortiz added 17 kills and eight digs for the Pride, which also got 21 digs from junior Caylie Denham. Junior Michela Rucli chipped in with 11 kills and four blocks for Hofstra. William & Mary was led Sydney Biniak, who had 16 kills, seven digs and three blocks.

Hofstra will conclude the stretch of three matches in four days on Monday when it hosts James Madison at 7 p.m.
