MTEN: Hofstra Completes First Day Of Farnsworth Invitational

Princeton, NJ - The Hofstra Men's Tennis team finished the first day of the Farnsworth Invitational at Princeton with five singles players and two doubles teams moving on to the consolation brackets.

Jan Leithner received a first round bye at "A" singles, but dropped his round of 16 match to Dusan Vukicevic of St. John's in straight sets (6-4, 6-2).

In "B" singles, Niko Vulinovich picked up a hard-fought win in his first round match, defeating Harry Wang of Lehigh in three sets. Wang took the first set in a tiebreak, 7-6 (7-4). But the Hofstra senior rallied for a 6-2 win in the second and a 10-6 victory in the third to move on in the main draw. But Vulinovich lost his round of 16 match to Virginia's Ammar Alhaqbani, 6-3, 6-2.

Coco Haener dropped a three-set "B" singles match to Bryant's Art Jakubowski in the round of 32. Haener won he first set, 6-4, but then dropped the next two by scores of 6-2 and 11-9 to slide into the consolation bracket. He rebounded to down Middlebury's Alex Vanezis, 6-4 and 7-6 (7-4).

Hofstra's two entrants in "C" singles – David Schrott and Nick Silvestri – suffered first round losses. Schrott fell to Lehigh's Dylan Karchere-Sun in straight sets (6-4, 6-3), while Silvestri dropped a 7-6 (7-0), 6-4 decision to Temple's Francisco Bohorquez.

Santiago Haas, Hofstra's "D" singles entrant lost his match to Lehigh's Sam Bencheghib by default.

Vulinovich and Haener suffered a tough loss in the "A" doubles flight, falling to Marist's Chris Gladden and Carlos Moreno by an 8-7 score. In "C" doubles, Schrott and Silvestri lost to Monmouth's William Cooke Wharton and Sergio Martinez, 8-4.

The Farnsworth Invitational continues Saturday.
