Niko Vulinovich and
Coco Haener advanced to the round of 16 in doubles play with an upset win over a seeded University of Pennsylvania team at the 2017 Intercollegiate Tennis Association Northeast Regional at Yale University.
Vulinovich and Haener knocked off the team of Kyle Mautner and Dmitry Shatalin, who were seeded in the 9-16 grouping, by an 8-6 score. The win propels the Hofstra pair into the third round for the second consecutive season. Vulinovich and Haener reached the quarterfinals of the 2016 ITA Northeast Regional and will need to defeat the top-seeded team of Victor Pham and Jackie Tang of Columbia to do so again this year. The teams will face off Saturday morning.
It wasn't all good news for the Pride though, as
Marcus Smith suffered a second round 6-2, 6-1 loss to Charlie Broom of Dartmouth to end his tournament. Broom was a 5-8 seed in the tournament.
